Not a bird, but hope its still ok to share on here...

My black cat, Shadow, had to be put to sleep this afternoon. I'm sure I don't need to explain on here of all places how totally distraught I am. I have cried so much I have been sick, and just can't stop crying. He had a very short illness and I know I have done the right thing and shortened his suffering, but it's still so hard!

To add insult to injury I then had to go into work (I've been such a cowbag to work with I was allowed home early even though we're *really* short). I got home at 11pm and thought Milo cuddles might help. Wrong. He was a total jerk and brought back all the partly healed sorrow of losing my beloved Kev 3 years ago- he knew when I was upset and would gently lick my tears away and preen the salt residue off my eyelashes. Milo is still young and egocentric and wasn't in the least bit interested in me unless it's to his advantage.

I can't even get my stupid phone to upload a pic of him. He was a regular black cat with the cutest face. He was a rescue cat and was only with me for 6 years, but I like to think it was a good 6 years. This has been awful going through this alone, but then I realised although I do not post too often on here I do think of you all on here as friends, so hope you will read this and spare a kind thought for a heartbroken fellow parront :(

Run free Shadow, I'll meet you by the bridge xxx

I'm so sorry! :( I'm on my phone reading here at a restaurant and had to hold back tears. I can feel how distraught you are. Then to add insult to injury about Milo... Well, like you say, he's young, and sometimes younger animals just don't have the life experience to 'get' their human friends. He will in time. Hang in there I know it's very difficult.

I'm so sorry for your sad loss of Shadow. I can tell how very much you loved him and I'm sure Shadow knew that too. No matter the circumstances or the time you've had together, it's always heartbreaking to say goodby. I'm glad Shadow had six happy years with you. My thoughts are with you.

All of us here share your grief, and probably all of us have been there. I have, personally, several times this year (2014 has sucked, big time, for us). Sharing your loss with all of us here is the first step toward healing.

The decision you had to make is perhaps the most difficult one we can face. There are always the "what if?" recriminations, but in time, you'll look back and know, absolutely, that you did the right thing, at the right time. The fact that Shadow's illness was short was a blessing in disguise, you kept him from suffering, and ended it when it could no longer be controlled. You gave him your love, and you gave him what he needed, even in this final decision. Take comfort in knowing that no animal could ever ask for more.

Milo may be feeling the loss, too, which could explain his antisocial behavior. When I lost my beloved Toby (Husky-X) just over a year ago, our other dog started behaving strangely. At first, she was just standoffish, then moody, then she stopped eating, lost weight, was sick all the time, etc. In fact, she was feeling the loss almost as much as I was and, as dogs aren't able to express grief like we can, it came out in other ways. The arrival of another dog, months later, was the final cure.

Keep in touch with the people here. They are a wonderful support base, and have enormous empathy. No one is better equipped to help than those who've been there themselves.

Take care, and re-read the Rainbow Bridge.

Rest in peace, Shadow.
