My azure IRN Scout died last night. I checked on him before I went to bed about 1:30am, all seemed well. He has seemed like himself, looked like himself... Now he is dead. A million things are running through my mind, was Blue not letting him eat and I didn't notice? He just moved outside (I live in Hawaii, my birds love spending a couple of weeks outside) did something in the wind hit him? Did something toxic get blown into his cage or dropped in by another bird or animal? Did his fresh food sit in his dish too long and spoil? Did someone spray him with something, or poison him on purpose? I am beside myself. I am leaving now to take his body in for a necropsy.

Oh Dani! I am so sorry!! :( I can see how worrisome the circumstances are on top of all the heartache and shock. Good that you're getting the necropsy. I hope the results are telling. How long is the wait?

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
I am so sorry for the loss of Scout. A sudden loss is terrifying; no time to mentally prepare and a halo of uncertainty for the flock.

Perhaps the necropsy will help bring an understanding; when you are able a close forensic examination of Scout's enclosure may provide clues.

Hahn's macaw, RIP George, Jenday Conure
I hate to say this but ever since my conure George died one night, I've lived with Hahnzels mortality in my mind. I know one day she'll pass, and it has unfortunately dulled my senses so to speak. Somehow I believed George would live forever, or at least longer that 7 years. This is yet another of the wake up calls for pet ownership/stewardship.

There are pets, and there are friends... Scout was a friend. He would fly above and ahead of my during breakfast prep, sample everyone's food, try to bathe in other birds' water dishes as I filled them...

Necropsy is in, his organs were beautiful and healthy. His body weight was a bit low, but he had food in all parts of his digestive track. I wondered if Blue had been keeping him from the food, but that seems to be unlikely. The vet says he could test for psittacosis but that seems unlikely, I told him I would test Blue for it myself since they shared a cage. I pick up his body in the morning, the vet pulled his tail feathers for me to keep.

His breeder is heartbroken, and cried on the phone with me. I love her and am so thankful for her. Her birds are in high demand, but she says if she has any unspoken for birds this yr she is giving me another one, even though I told her I do not think it is her fault.

The best solution we can come up with is that with his slightly low body weight (though I had felt him two days ago and he felt ok) perhaps the chilly weather which didn't bother any of my other birds, even the budgies right next to him, was too much to bear.

Blue has been screaming for him.

Fly free Scout, you pesky beautiful charming brat.

Oh, that is devastating... I'm so, so sorry, although I know, the words wouldn't help you... I was thinking about a spider (or some other nasty crawler) bite. :( It seems very unlikely he could die just from cold overnight without exhibiting ANY symptoms. How old was he?
The most important thing is that please, don't blame yourself for anything - when we love we often take the blame and it can haunt us for years.
Giving you hugs over the air... Stay strong.
