It was expected to be a short life with us. Baby Blue was already in her mid 30's. She lost her mate to a broken neck. For the past twelve years, she had NO human contact. But within minutes of picking her up, she cuddled up in my arms.
We had just gotten her in early December. The caretakers were shocked to see her so calm and gentle in my hands. They had been scared to touch her for over a decade.
But she never once bit me. I'd even purposely put my fingers in her mouth in a silly game of "catch the tongue". She'd play and loved it. But never once did she hurt me.
Yet I knew she was nearing the end. The vet gave her a clean bill of health, but she stayed hunched over anyway, as though she was always cold and sick.
This evening, she passed away. Baby Blue lived for well over 30 years in the same room of the same house. But before she left us, she got a taste of a loving touch once again. She saw sunshine and ate more nuts than just macadamia.
The last two months, she tasted freedom.
I am very sad she is gone. I only had her two months, but she was just beginning to enjoy life again. But her time was done, and she was old enough to move on. We will miss you, Baby Blue. We will miss you more than you know.
