It was expected to be a short life with us. Baby Blue was already in her mid 30's. She lost her mate to a broken neck. For the past twelve years, she had NO human contact. But within minutes of picking her up, she cuddled up in my arms.

We had just gotten her in early December. The caretakers were shocked to see her so calm and gentle in my hands. They had been scared to touch her for over a decade.

But she never once bit me. I'd even purposely put my fingers in her mouth in a silly game of "catch the tongue". She'd play and loved it. But never once did she hurt me.

Yet I knew she was nearing the end. The vet gave her a clean bill of health, but she stayed hunched over anyway, as though she was always cold and sick.

This evening, she passed away. Baby Blue lived for well over 30 years in the same room of the same house. But before she left us, she got a taste of a loving touch once again. She saw sunshine and ate more nuts than just macadamia.

The last two months, she tasted freedom.

I am very sad she is gone. I only had her two months, but she was just beginning to enjoy life again. But her time was done, and she was old enough to move on. We will miss you, Baby Blue. We will miss you more than you know.

I am very sorry for your loss. I must say that if she always looked sick and cold than she clearly should not have been given a "clean bill of health" and maybe a second vet might have caught something your vet obviously missed. (I didn't mean for that to sound harsh to you and perhaps it did. I meant it more for the vet not catching that something was wrong.):(

30 yrs is only half the estimated life span of 60 years for a Hyacinth, what a tragedy and loss. :(

Perhaps it was nothing more than a broken heart and there was nothing anyone could do and nothing medically wrong other than depression and loneliness? Her mate may have had her soul, and without him she could not keep going. I know I'd feel the same without mine, and we all know birds feel every single emotion that we do. So it is possible. But it is a very great loss of a magnificent bird. I'm sorry to hear that. There are less and less of those in the wild, isn't that right? I read somewhere that their numbers were declining.

Bless you for taking this gorgeous Baby into your heart! You know, there are just some times when $#!+ happens, despite our best efforts. I have a feeling the love and security and companionship you offered this poor birdie meant a lot more to her than a fancy diet or bills of health. Perhaps she pined away, perhaps she had an obscure condition. Doesn't matter. It was her Time. And you have the satisfaction of knowing this precious girl got to feel a loving touch and a gentle hand before she passed away. Sending warmest hugs to you tonight. XX

Rest in peace, Baby Blue: you were a good bird!

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
I am so sorry Baby Blue has passed. While you likely gave her the best months of her life, it is tragic she did not fulfill a natural span.

I am sorry for the loss that you have had. But I am glad that you gave your wonderful bird hugs and the gift of sunshine. After years of neglect, she finally had a good life.

Thank you for taking her in and loving her. It sounds like she had been grieving for quite a while and when she left, she was surrounded by your love. Thank you.

I feel your pain, my sun conure Robin who was only 2 1/2, got a GI infection Friday. He was sent home Sunday and died 3 hours later. I'm still looking for answers. I'm heart broken at the loss of our first bird who we loved so much.

As a hospice nurse, I can say sometimes as you near the finish line, the quality outweighs the quantity. You gave her the gift of yourself. You gave her interaction and peace. In short, you wrote an excellent ending for the book of her life.
