My life was forever changed drastically yesterday. I'm still in shock.
My little precious Baby Dino started throwing up on Wednesday. Before then, there was no sign of illness. I took him yesterday to the vet. My vets VCA turn me down, because they stop not seeing birds, the last time I was there was 2012 with Dino. They referred me to go the Exotic Animal Care in Pasadena. Dino looked OK and try to hold up. The Exotic Animal turn me down, because they didn't had any availability yesterday and Dino's doesn't seem like an emergency. They gave me 3x phone numbers from other Bird vets. I call them all - with Dino in my car, after getting turned down. All the sudden Dino's conditions change. Within 20mins he got weaker and weaker and he couldn't lift his little head to drink/eat, he couldn't stand on his feet either. At that point i have called already 10 vets and all of them turn me down. The next available apt. was today at 10am in Glendale. I called back exotic animal care vet. Told them, they have to see Dino now!!! It's an emergency. They say they could give me an appointment for today at 11am as an emergency. Dino died yesterday 30mins after leaving the Exotic vet. It was horrible. What an horrible day! I had to watch him die and couldn't do anything, he fought for his life and screamed and cried and then stop moving with his eyes wide open.
After that I started hyperventilating, crying and screaming myself.
I can't believe my precious baby is gone all the sudden.

My house is now so quiet. So dead. No live. No Dino. I'm all alone.
Dino wasn't just a pet bird. He was my best friend and my companion. He was all I had. He talked to me all day long, called me mom, and he was just a delight and a bundle of joy to have in my life for the past 6 years. I can't believe he is gone forever! I don't know why he died. He was just 6 years old!!! He could have live till 36. I loved him so so so much. More then anything else on this world. And i miss him now so so so much. Nothing can express in words what I'm feeling right now.

I'm now so lost and sad and depress and grieving.
Thank you all who called and text and command. This is the biggest loss I have ever experience in my entire life.

Oh God this is sooo painful..... this hurts so bad...... Life has lost it purpose.
I have Dino's body in the freezer now. I was thinking about getting an autopsy. Anyone has experience this ?
The hardest part was losing you and now learning to live without you is harder.

It's 4.06 in the morning, and I and lying in bed, reading what happened to you and I am crying my eyes out for you and little Dino. A hardened 63 old man, whose also lost a parrot years ago. I feel terrible for you .
but you did all you could . F ING vets, they can be real hard people. I am so sorry for your loss, and that you had to witness the whole thing, that's the hard part , to see your buddy go down hill, and feel helpless. Try not to be alone and don't be ashamed to cry about your loss . My sympathies will lie with you today.

I am so sorry. We are so lucky here that my vet is often willing to stay late and come in on her days off for emergencies… :( I know how much it hurts to see them suffer <3

I am so sooo sorry for your loss...no words I can say can comfort you but you did your very best to help Dino fight for life and your Dino knows that and remembers it even now at Rainbow Bridge and even though you can nolonger see him he is not far from you and hears your every word and sigh and sees your every tear and he will fly with you always trying to console you and filling your life with many Blessings . One day you will look back and smile as you remeber the love and the great bond you had but right now its hard and made all the harder by the fact that those horrible people in that exotic animal clinic were so heartless. In my books a veterinary clinic like that would be best shut down so others dont have the same terrible experience you had. They should have treated Dino his symptoms alone made him an emergency. RIP Dino fly free ...take care and remember you did the very best you could for your Dino no one could have done more :smile016:

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
My deepest condolences on your loss of Dino. It is so sad beyond words when they pass at a young age, and worse when you feel helpless while seeking medical attention.

Do you have a close and sympathetic support system while you grieve? If not, many animal shelters have grief-counseling groups. They can be of great help if you feel comfortable sharing your loss with others.

I have had bird necropsies in the past, and they can help with the grieving process based on the findings. Or not, as sometimes the results are inconclusive. They range from a physical inspection to sending tissue to a lab for analysis.

Please keep us advised of how you are doing. So many of us have shared such loss and sadness.

I am so very sorry for your loss. The suddenness of it, and the terrible feeling of helplessness you must have experienced trying to find help for Dino.

I've had a necropsy done on one of my birds. It's a very good idea, especially if you think you might eventually get another in the future. But keep in mind that if you are going to do it, time is of the essence. The longer you wait, the less likely you are to find the answers you are looking for. The evidence degrades quickly. You did the right thing keeping him in the freezer. That slows things down. But you still need to get him to the place for the necropsy by later today or tomorrow.

Again, my deepest condolences.

This pains me to read. I am so deeply sorry to hear about your loss of Dino and the circumstances. I hope that you can get him in for a necropsy asap, to at least provide closure at this difficult time. Please accept my condolences.

I am sorry for your loss. I lost my Amazon of 40 years this past fall.

To any experienced users reading this thread, in case of an emergency, is any vet better than waiting? We have a couple of 24 hour emergency clinics within an hour of us...do all vets have some basic knowledge of birds or must you wait for an Avian vet?

Again, sorry.

See my bereavement thread about Spice, I had a necropsy done for her and believe me it eased my mind a lot. Even though I'm still very sad, I know there's not much I could have done to help her, and that I hadn't done anything wrong.

You tried your best to help Dino, and it's not your fault that other people were uncooperative.

Thank you for all your sweet comments here on this forum.

Dino had a Facebook page, I would like to share with you. I had him for 6years and these 6 years were years full of joy. Dino didn't think he was a bird. He thought he was a human and I treated him that way. He was never lock up in his cage. He was a free and very happy bird. He knew that he was loved.
We had so much fun together. I was so proud of him.
He poops on command and talks and did lots of tricks.
He was my little angel.

UPDATE on the Necropsy:

Yesterday I had an appointment at the Animal Heath Care Center for Dino's necropsy. I need to know what cause his sudden death, and why he had been throwing up, before I can close this chapter.
My friend came over for helping me to get Dino's body out of the freezer. In order to get a Necropsy preformed, you should never freeze the body, but rather refrigerate it. Freezing appear to damage the cells.
We had to now De-frost Dino's body.
My appointment was scheduled for 3:30pm. I was there at 3pm. After bringing in Dino's body to the Animal Heath Care Center in Eagle Rock they send me away and refer me to the Animal Diagnostic Laboratory in Tustin. They told me that would be the best Pathologist who can go through a complete internal and external examination and determined the cause of Death. I had to take Dino's body back home and refrigerate it. Tomorrow I have an appointment in Tustin to drop off his body at the lab. I really hope that they can provide me with valuable information, regarding the cause of his sudden death.

This is the lab, i will bring DINO
http://caadl.com/

They charge $330 for a full necropsy on any animal less than 35lb.
It comes with a full report and lab results.
The vet I went to, say i would be wasting my money if they would preform the necrosy. They would have just cut him open and perform no lab test for $150.
They saw how distress i was and they refer me to http://caadl.com/.

I wish you all the best with the necropsy. I really hope that the cells were not damaged by the freezing, and that the necropsy will yield accurate results. It would be nice to have for sake of closure. Good luck, keep us posted.

What did you do with Spices remains after the necropsy? The lab told me, that they would not be able to return Dino's remains to me. I need to hire a pet crematory to pick up his remains and have it professional cremated.
