Today i became the most careless parent ever. I've had birds off and on for 25+ years and i should be smarter than this. Today my mango flew to my shoulder while I was putting clothes in my washing machine. He then flew away, i thought back to his cage. Shortly after I realized I couldn't find him...he flew back to me but went in the machine while i was throwing clothes in. I must have thrown something on top of him and I never saw him..By the time I found him, after searching all his favorite spots, it was too late.
Mango would have been a year old in a couple week. I miss him so much but I don't know how I am going to deal with what i did.
I wanted to share my story and my stupidity so others can learn from me.

i don't think my friends and family can understand how I am feeling. I should have checked before I shut the door. :smile016::smile016::smile016:
I lecture my family members daily on the do's and don'ts of birds and I'm the one that was careless.

i think my dogs and my Lola can tell I'm in pain.
RIP Mango

I am so so so so sorry.
I've made equal mistakes, and luckily nothing bad came of them.
I'm so sorry.
She died loved, if that helps at all.

Oh my God, what a horrible thing to happen. I'm sure everyone on the board feels your pain, but please dont beat yourself up, this was an accident pure and simple.

A donation has been made in Mango's name to the Cornell Veterinary program, for Parrot related health studies. So very sorry for you my friend.

I'm just so sorry, I just teared up reading this. I know it won't make losing Mango any easier, nothing will do that but time, but this is not your fault at all. It was an accident that could happen to any of us, it only takes a split second to lose track of them. I have a green cheek and he has almost been stepped on I don't know how many times, he flies to me no matter where I'm at and I don't realize that he's there. Seriously, please don't blame yourself, you are not a careless parrot owner, you loved Mango and would never hurt him purposely.

I'll be thinking about you and hugging my birds for you and Mango tonight.

Only a split second separates many of us from a fatal mistake also. I'm sorry. Loving our feathered babies comes with a huge cost to the heart. And our busy lives always taking care of others, doing one hundred things in a day makes us unable to be aware of everything single thing at all moments. Many hugs, I'll send through the week. XO

I'm so sorry for your loss. You know that there is no way you could have anticipated the need to check the machine. It isn't possible to stop before every routine action to imagine what improbable thing might go wrong. It was a tragic accident, and you have my heartfelt sympathy.

I am so sorry too. Yes we all need eyes in the back of our head when our fids are loose, thanks for sharing this so we can add it to the list of possible dangers to be aware of.
RIP little Mango.

I'm so sorry for your loss of Mango.

Everyone makes mistakes sometimes, and the results can be good or bad. All that matters is that you learn from those mistakes.

I am so sorry. That was very painful to read and it literally physically hurt when I imagined your Mango, but it's nothing in comparison to the pain you are feeling yourself. I know you're beating yourself up, but remember that no one is immune from accidents. I stepped on Griffin's head hard enough to dislocate his beak last year. We were lucky. It was Mango's time to go fly as an angel. RIP sweet little one.

I want to thank you all for you wishes. I am doing better today, but have relived what happened everyday since it happened. What I could have done, should have done. I was waiting for it to warm up to bring him to get his wings clipped, I wish I was able to have got that done. Lola senses the difference and the quietness without Mango. I know it's probably too soon but have thoughts a=of getting a new baby to fill the gap in my house. but only time will tell with that....

I like Sunny's idea about how sharing these stories saves lives by raising future awareness.
It's painful to share AND to read, but it's the right thing to do.

I am so sorry to read this... its not your fault.. its a horrible accident. As a mom of human, feathered and furred kids, please try not to blame yourself. Really its a heartbreaking horrible accident. My heart goes out to you for your pain and the loss, but know its not something that is negligent or you should blame yourself for.

Even as an Adoption Coordinator, we have had people like yourself who have experienced such a tragic accident, we would not blame you or see you as a bad bird parrot. I know it will take a while for you to not blame yourself, but I hope in time you can focus on the wonderful time Mango had with you.
