Goodbye my sweet boy. Though you were so small, your heart was so big

I had to say goodbye to my sweet boy last night. Though he was so small, my parakeet Tibbers slowly showed how big a heart he had. He was so loving and trusting in the last years we had him.

He was once a scared young parakeet that was treated badly. I had gone to adopt a cockatiel many years ago and the man who owned the cockatiel asked me if I wanted a parakeet too. After asking if he was friendly, he reached in the cage and grabbed him roughly. There was no way I was leaving him behind. His age at the time I got him was unknown. He didn't have any baby stripes on his head.

It took a few years to gain Tibber's trust enough to step on my finger for a few seconds at first. He was so scared of everything but little by little he sat on my finger longer and the more time past, the sweeter and more trusting he became. At the time of his passing he was free to fly around and he happily visited the people and places in the house he loved. He loved flying and sitting on my son's head, he loved flying to snitch some food we were eating for lunch, he loved flying to see his parrot buddy Cassie and to share her food and treats, and he so loved flying to my held out hand for some attention every time I let him out. This past year he even started letting me kiss and pet his belly and he would stay on my finger for as long as I let him. He became so very trusting and sweet.

I will miss you my Tibbers so very much. You will be forever loved. I have loved all the time I had with you over the past 8 years and know you knew how much you were loved too. It's so hard saying goodbye.


(Tibbers died of old age due to a fast growing tumor. He was babied and loved to the very end.)

I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. How can such a tiny thing leave such an empty space? They are bigger on the inside than they are on the outside.

Thank you everyone for your kind thoughts. We are missing Tibbers so much and my preschoolers too don't understand why he's gone. Poor little ones don't understand.

Well, tonight I was looking though photos I had of Tibbers and I had Cassie my Senegal parrot on my shoulder. It didn't cross my mind that she too misses Tibbers. When I stopped at a photo, she climbed down my arm to the computer screen and reached her beak towards him and seemed to have given him a kiss. I got teary eyed. Tibbers had a bit of a crush on Cassie and she tolerated him being by her. He flew by her every chance he got. Sooo sweet she misses him too. Cassie is 6 years old so she was with him since I first got her as a baby. Here is a picture of them together.
