Charlotte-It happened so fast

I left to go shopping at 5PM. Charlotte was fine. She was swinging from the top of her cage, singing the song of her people, happy as could be. At 6:15 MrC called me and told me to get home fast. Charlotte was sick. I raced home and we raced to the vet. We got her there, but there was nothing they could do. They brought her back into the room with us so she could die in our arms. I don't even know what to do with myself right now.

Oh no! I am so sorry for your loss! Does the vet know what happened?
I am so thankful that she had you to love her, and care for her for the last part of her life.

My deepest condolences for your loss of Charlotte. I am so sorry and shocked beyond disbelief, Maggie.

I assume the rest of your flock is OK, racking my brain wondering if there is a systemic issue in your home?

Scott, I'm wondering the same thing. We're bringing her into Dr. J for a necropsy tomorrow. Cookie was extremely old, Leo had ABV, but all the rest of the flock tested negative. Arco simply couldn't recover from the gas/oil exposure from being covered in it when I found him. Goofy and Oscar got sick, but that was a random strep infection, and we had the whole flock tested at that time to make sure it wasn't spreading through everybody.

The birds I take in have had rough lives. Charlotte couldn't even be handled when we brought her home. Oscar was rescued from a dark, smoke filled basement. Arco was found covered in oil at a gas station. They have all had issues prior to coming to me. We don't know their histories or their actual ages. Well, except Goofy. Goofy we know because he's belonged to MrC or MrC's BIL his whole life. I guess I could have less loss if I only adopted birds that have had good lives, with known histories, and no murky backgrounds nor mistreatment in their past.

Please don't blame me right now. I'm not a bad person or a bad parrot owner. Charlotte just had her annual exam last month and everything was fine.

I dare anyone to do this! You are a fantastic parront, so no more of this OK? We are all extremely saddened by your loss, may Charlotte fly free. We are all very curious as I am sure you are as to the cause though. Take care of yourself now.

You take on wonderful needy souls and in Charlotte's case, saw her out in love and belonging. That was the greatest gift. We'll never forget her.
I'm so very sorry for you, but so glad you were there for dearest Charlotte. You're braver than I could ever be.

No blame coming your way, Maggie. You are an angel for seeking the downtrodden and giving them far better lives than previously experienced. I applaud you for rescuing, knowing the odds of endemic illness are higher given the unknowns.

If anyone can identify the cause, it will be Dr. J. Not wishing to speculate, but my hunch, given the suddenness, is a significant internal event you could not foresee.

What I'm hoping, is that she was just far older than we though she was. There were no signs of illness or trauma; absolutely nothing to indicate a problem was cropping up. When we got home, I even went straight to her cage and inspected her poop again, just to make sure, and it was totally normal, right up to the end. His office opens at 9 today, so I plan on calling when they open and leaving right away to bring her body in. He should have preliminary results this afternoon.

Oh my dear, I am so sorry for you and your husband, who gave Charlotte the love she deserved and more. Know that i made a donation in Charlottes name to Cornell University' Vet college, to be used exclusively on parrot related studies and programs. She will be remembered. And all of us here in my house offer our condolences.

No! Oh, I'm so sorry. Perhaps Charlotte had a heart condition, something that wouldn't show up in an exam. I know it isn't much comfort...but to think of her last day as a happy, singing, joyful soul after a lifetime of who knows what misery...may we all experience such grace.

Thank you. We dropped off her body at the vet's this morning. He usually doesn't do necropsies on the weekends, so we will probably have to wait until Monday to find out anything. The wait is terrible.
