I have been waiting to make this post until I had results back from the necropsy. As some of you may know, I have had a pair of cockatiels since 2015, they had babies in 2016 for me. But while sitting on eggs on April 6, 2018, I found my female, a beautiful big cinnamon pearl, passed away. The night before she was pooping blood, which I dismissed since she had ben eating red peppers. Even by then it was too late to save her.

Peach was, from day 1, quite shy, but always remained tame. She would step up only if her mate Boo did first and she never once bit me. She was larger than Boo, a bit of a clumsy flier, but would eat anything I put in her bowl, unlike her mate Boo who has always been pickier.

Her death was very sudden and I was absolutely devastated. My animals are my passion, I put 100% into their care, especially their diet, so after her sudden passing I was left questioning my level of care. Now I know that there was nothing I could have done.

According to her necropsy, she had both a liver and kidney failure. It was likely something she was born with, possibly never working quite right from the beginning, (I got her with no history) and laying eggs I'm guessing worsened her condition. I am glad to know though that it was not infectious, and there was nothing I could have done to save her.

Now I can finally pick myself up from this, know that I gave her the best care I could and I can move on and look up into the sky on this sunny day and know she isn't hurting anymore. So fly free now. Fly with no more suffering. Love you, sweet Peach.

RIP Peach, 2013 (?) - 2018.

I'm so sorry to hear of your loss.

Really glad you got reassuring answers. They are such delicate little creatures. No doubt your love and care enabled her to live longer than she would have without it and she was happy and in love enough to lay.

She was a beautiful girl. I look forward to finding out about your future birdy adventures x

Her knowing she was loved deeply is more important then why. I know that the why helps us to understand. Find comfort in her knowing, its what will provide you comfort. Thank-you for Loving Her!

The amazing thing is, is that despite how sick she really was, she still chose to try raising a family.

The last bird I lost was a cockatiel and she died from cancer of the liver. She also died 'with egg'. My vet didn't believe me when I told her that I believed this tiel had an egg! She, too, had no history, other than what I knew about from the place I got her from... and she would have died several years ago if I hadn't taken her in...

My condolences. She was a pretty girl!

Seems to show how strong the reproductive drive is with many species!

I'm so sorry for your devastating loss. The most wonderful and sad thing is, is she had her last days raising a family. She looked so precious. Rest assured you also took great care of her. May she fly free with her wings extended high, and her life and memory live on.:smile019:

Currently I have none, but I have the capacity to adopt a minimum and maximum of two budgies - preferably a bonded pair or two males.
Hi Itzjbean

Sorry to hear about your loss! It must feel very bad.

Reminded me of the days when I had budgies and lost Preethi, the Opaline Cobalt female budgie , who died all of a sudden.
