Yesterday I lay to rest my poor PeePee bird.

His recent blood test at the vet showed signs of liver disease, not uncommon for parrotlets. They were surprised he was almost 13. Yesterday I was supposed to go pick up medication and some new food options to help buy him more time, but despite several days of seemingly excellent health, it was suddenly too late.
Thank you, PeePee, for being my first L.A. pet.
Thank you for always wanting to sleep under your mama's hair even if you wanted to kill my fingers.
Thank you for answering back "Peeeeeeepeeeeeeee!" whenever I said your name from another room.
Thank you for forgiving me when I got jobs that were more and more time consuming, and didn't get you out as often as I probably should have.
Thank you for being my friend, and for that last terribly painful, blood drawing bite on my thumb.
I miss you already.
There's nobody to answer "Peeeeeeeepeeeeeeeeee!"

I am not sure what to do with all his things. I have nice toys and the cage, but I don't know whether I should ever get another bird. I also do not know whether rescue groups would accept items if he died of an illness (not contagious, but some places seem to have firm policies). Right now I am too sore from a recent car accident to take the cage outside to clean it, so i just have to leave everything alone.

I buried him with his favorite toy and his favorite treat under my rose bush. We will miss him so much.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Your first L.A. pet was adorable. I hope you have lots and lots of sweet memories to comfort you in the days ahead. A lot of us know first hand what you're going through and understand how painful it is. My thoughts are with you.

Please take some time to grieve before making a decision about whether to have another bird at some point as you are a wonderful parront & any bird would be lucky to have you.

Thank you for sharing.

Your love was/is/willalwaysbe a beautiful thing. I admire you. You saw your baby into Eternity the right way. I hope I can do that for my RB someday.

Someday you will be able to rededicate and renew your readiness to love a bird. Your heart is too beautiful a resource not to find a new feathery heart.

Thank you for being you.

Ohhh I'm so sorry to read this this morning. Before deciding what to do with anything, take some time. Sending lots of feathered hugs your way, many of us unfortunately understand how bad this feels. But someday your memories of your baby will bring more smiles than tears to you.

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
My deepest condolences for your loss of PeePee. Your beautiful tribute suggests much remains to be given to a feathered companion in the future.

I would suggest storing the cage and toys in open-ended fashion. At some point you may find the need, and your story will begin anew.

Thanks everyone for your support. I don't know any parrot owners locally so this community has been important during this time.
Still a bit sore from my accident, so I may do some light cleaning of belongings but no major hauling just yet. Per your thoughts and my own feelings, I will probably keep the cage out in the garage for a while and see what happens. I don't know that I'm done with birds, but I certainly want to make sure I'm in a place in life where I can give the full deserved attention (and maybe wait for our most recently adopted foster kitten to get a little bit less zippy).
