The nature of my job requires that I maintain anonymity, but I want this little green budgieās life to be acknowledged and remembered.
This particular budgie was kept by an elderly resident in a retirement home. He would not have had the best diet or veterinary care, but for eight years he was the much-loved companion of a lonely aged person who tried as best as they knew how to care for him. I know the bird had been unwell for some weeks but due to the limited income and lack of mobility of the owner he didnāt get the medical attention that may have extended his life. But nonetheless I know his owner loved him dearly and would have done more for him if it had been possible. His story must be one that is all too commonly repeated all over the world as so many older people lose contact with close family and desperately crave someone to talk to and to love, and who might just love them back.
Thank you little green one for your precious life and for everything that you unknowingly did for your carer, and a million more thank yous to all the countless other feathered heroes like you that I know are out there. May you fly free, your job on this Earth now done and your duty well and truly served.
