Mr Jingles OWA.....RIP
My Orange winged amazon,MrJingles, died 8 days ago. I had had him for 16 years from when he was 4 months old. My partner left his cage open when he went out and our rescue dog killed him. He came home and found a pile of feathers and a small amount of blood. I found some of his little toe nails and a toe in the dog's feaces. I can't get over it. I am heartbroken. I miss his voice and his funny little ways. He had been with me through thick and thin. No one was here when he died. He was probably looking for me to rescue him. He must have been so frightened. I want to know if he died quickly but I'll never know. I love him so much. Has anyone here had a similar thing happen . Do birds die quickly when a dog gets them? Somebody please help...I feel I am going out of my mind with guilt and sadness. I have visions of him having a horrible death. Please help.

Sorry to hear about your loss, and I'm sure he went quickly with minimal suffering, it is not in the nature of dogs to torture or kill slowly, take your time to grieve, remember, this too shall pass, in time you will have all of the wonderful memories you two shared.

Things like that happen in life beyond control, we all feel that sort of pain some time in our life when we feel we are stuck in a hole without being able to help it.
I believe if it was a dog that got Mr Jingles, it would have been relatively quick in a way, but you never know unfortunately.
My Mum had a very similar thing happen to my uncles and hers cockatoo named Ralphy, who had his aviary left open by friends and the dog got to the poor darling
Keep the positives in mind, such as happy memories and the fact you got to share 16 very happy years with him
Guilt is always part of the grieving process with pets, nobody can deny that, but accidents happen and the lengthy life of Mr Jingles shall be not forgotten
My deepest condolences are being onto yourself and Mr Jingles family, and I'm sure wherever that little man is he will be looking down onto a very loving family for sure (its making me have a bit of a tear up writing this)
Sincerely
Noah Till

So very sorry to read of the loss of Mr Jingles. Try not to focus on your loss, but the many happy joyful moments you had with him. I hope the rest of our members take this to heart - cat&dogs and parrots do not mix. No matter how trustworthy you may think the situation. My family's condolences to you and yours.

Oh, I'm so sorry for your loss of Mr. Jingles. I can only imagine how awful you're feeling. Please try not to beat yourself up over it. Try as we might, accidents happen. Years ago, my first Amazon, Cuckoo managed to be out of his cage overnight. I woke up to a small pile of feathers near the cage, and some in the kitchen. My heart sank, and I ran all over the house looking and calling for him. After a bit, I finally heard a sad, weak, "hello, hello," coming from behind a rolling cabinet against the wall. He luckily was able to escape and hide where the dog couldn't reach. Some of his tail feathers never grew back, but he survived. I eventually lost him to a heart attack several years later, largely due to my ignorance at the time. I've learned a lot since then. The take away for me was to be extra vigilant, all the time. Even when you think everything is safe, there's always a way for accidents to happen.

Again, I'm so sorry for your loss. Enjoy the good memories with him, it's the best way to honor his life with you.

I'm so sorry to hear what has happened.

I haven't lost a bird to a dog attack, but my dogs have killed wild animals in my garden unfortunately. In my experience they kill very quickly. They don't have the "play" drive that cats do. Knowing my dogs the mess is far more likely to be after your bird had died. My dogs have killed 2 rabbits and a pigeon and every time the killing was quick. I saw the pigeon get killed and it didn't even realise what was happening (neither did I or I would have shouted to scare it and stop my dog), but then the dogs would damage the body if it wasn't taken off them quickly.

It's a terrible accident, but I truly wouldn't worry too much about your bird suffering for a long time.

I am so very sorry for your loss of MrJingles. My heart goes out to you and your partner, who I'm sure also feels just terrible about what happened.
I hope that soon the wonderful memories of the time you spent together will help to dull the memory of how he passed. Sending you my deepest condolences and warm hugs of comfort.

It's just so hard to read these posts. It just hurts to hear of such sadnesses.

My heart breaks with you. I wish we could make it better.

It's good to share the risks are other pets can be to our parrots. As there are many people who think their dog or cat, or ferret would never harm their bird.......

Thank you so much for sharing. Your post here might save another bird somewhere. I have dogs as well, and it's easy to get complacent with leaving them out alone for a minute while you leave the room.

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
My deepest and tearful condolences for your loss of Mr. Jingles. May you forever be consoled by his bright memories.

I well know your pain having experienced the loss of my beloved Allie as result of tragic accident. I was away at work during a rainy day and my stepfather accidentally left his flight cage ajar. He let one of our dogs in the garage to dry off and Allie must have emerged out of curiosity. This was a Bouvier des Flandres of dubious trust and up till that moment we had 100% isolation. It was over quickly. Thankfully his mate Alice remained safely inside the cage.

Grief stricken when I returned a few days later, the dog was immediately placed in a Bouvier rescue and re-homed to a loving bird-free home. I wrote a long letter to Allie and enclosed several images within a manila envelope. It remained sealed for well over a decade, and I managed to read the letter and view pictures without trauma. Still have the compilation, and not a day goes by without thinking of Allie. Perhaps the hardest hit was Alice, a moderately tame Citron Cockatoo. About 6 months later we got her a new mate, Gandalf.

None. My wife has one too many. Kidding!
That is absolutely horrible. My god. Well, here is something my wife says to people who have had a terrible loss, so I'll offer it. Your little bird left this world as a loved and treasured family member, which is a very great treasure indeed. Please feel better.

Oh what a horrible accident! I’d be utterly devastated too! But like others have said I’m fairly sure Mr Jingles would not have survived for long since birds are so delicate. Accidents like this can happen in the blink of an eye and I’m sure Mr Jingles would not want you to blame yourself. He was a lucky little bird indeed to have such a loving home because there are so many others who sadly don’t. Take all the time you need to grieve his loss but in time i hope you will be able to welcome another birdie into your heart and give him a happy home. Meanwhile I’m sending lots of feathered cyber-hugs to you!

I am so very sorry for your tragic loss of Mr Jingles.

My heart is aching just thinking of you all. I'll never understand why horrible things happen in this life, but they do. You should not feel guilty, as you did nothing wrong and neither did your partner. It was an accident, I tragic unforeseen accident.

I'm deeply sorry for your loss and suffering.

I'm so very sorry for your loss. For now, words will likely be little comfort. But know that we all feel your pain and hope, in our limited way from this distance, to help shoulder some of the burden of your grief. In your thoughts of him over the next few days and weeks, try to focus more on the way he lived rather than the tragedy of his death. It is the love and joy of the good memories that will help you get through the grief of tragedy.

And no, I don't believe he would have suffered. As mentioned earlier, dogs don't tend to play in that way. They end things quickly.

I cannot tell all of you lovely people how much your words have comforted me. My heart is still full of sadness for having lost Jingles ….this site seems the only thing keeping me sane at the moment. I am going to try to sort some photos of him this afternoon. Thank you all again...so much.

Please allow yourself to grieve. A dear friend shared the following in my time of need:

"“There is a sacredness in tears. They are not a mark of weakness, but of power. They speak more eloquently than ten thousand tongues. They are the messengers of overwhelming grief, of deep contrition and of unspeakable love.”
Washington Irving quote.

Losing a family member, friend, pet, child, parent etc is never easy, these are difficult times in a persons life and many or most of them are an unfortunate part of an average persons experience in life. I have lost many, many people, and pets, it is never easy, but it does get better, don't fight the grief, let it happen, I promise you one day you will begin to focus on the positive memories more than the loss, it just takes time.

I come on this site everyday since Mr Jingles died. Thank you. Today is not a good day. He died 12 days ago now. I have sorted some photos of him. Everyday is the same..lots of crying, lots of guilt and lots and lots of sadness. I am going back to work on Monday and dreading it. I can't stop thinking about it and it wakes me in the night and hit me like a sledgehammer in the mornings. I miss my Mr Jingles so much. I'm sure that I will feel like this forever. I just needed to write down how I feel. Thank you and bless you all.
