Umbrella Cockatoo-11 yo female "Bianca"
Bianca passed away 1 month ago. Approximately 1 year ago, she developed a prolapsed vent. At first we tried some different therapies and hormone treatments with our avian vet. None of them worked and prolapse got worse. Next we went with surgery to suture up the vent. First time it lasted 9 days before reopened. Next time it lasted 2 days, then 1 day and final time just an hour.
She was never in any pain and her life seemed normal. Then one morning I came to her room and she was on the bottom of the cage dead. There was blood all around her. It appears that an artery connected to the prolapse burst. I believe she passed very quickly. I have been heartbroken. I know I shouldn't feel guilty but I do. She was a rescue I did 3 years ago and we got along so well. She was only 13 years old. I miss you Biance

Oh no! I'm so sorry. You have lived through some trauma, and you gave her a very good home.

This hit close to home, as my U2 is 13, and she is also a rescue. I am so sorry....
Was it due to egg-laying? I am not trying to be insensitive, but I am curious because that's what I associate with U2s and prolapsed vents, but I worry about mine all the time because she has never produced an egg, but I'm scared that she might...

Again, so sorry....I cannot imagine the pain you feel.

I remember your story, and hiw extreme her prolapse were, and how diligently you tried to help her. You did an outstanding job of taking care of her. No one could have done better. I'm so sorry she lost her battle. I'm so very glad you were her Parront, that you loved her and fought for her abd provided for her. You really have my admiration. I know how much you suffered with each set back. Im glad you shared her journey with us, i wish she could have had more time.

O very much once you are healed. That you Are able to share your home again with a feathered friend. You have so much to offer, such a big heart, there is one waiting for you I have no doubt. We have a member here who's signature is there is no cure for love but more love ( I may not have got it right) but the quote touches me in its truth

So sad about your loss, but really, you did all you could for her, and she had a loving home in her last years.

Hi Noodles-thanks for your support. No, it had nothing to do with egg laying. It was hormonal. I even had an implant in her to counter the hormones but no good. The sphincter muscles were extremely stressed. That is why the sutures wouldn't hold.

But why did it prolapse originally?
Sorry....just watching my bird being hormonal and wondering..
