Re: New here and lost my conure

Thank you everybody for your kind words. I have this terrible feeling that I failed him. I am looking for reasons why he died and I am finding many reasons that I might have not caught in time. I moved to a new place and on the second night he died. He seemed happy. I didn't think that the place would matter as much because he spent most of the time on my shoulder.
As I am doing more research and analyzing things, of course the new place mattered. I am suspecting that he could've been ill and I didn't catch it as I am now reading that birds hide if they are not well. Also, the new apartment where I moved could've been cleaned with something toxic even though I aired it before I moved him here. On that particular night it got really cold and even though I was raising the temperature on the thermostat, he might have still gotten too cold. I didn't realize how cold the new apartment gets at night...
The night before I had a terrible migraine ... I had this thought in my head that I would pick him up from his cage and watch a movie and spend the night with him, but I didn't ... I went to bed early. He was quiet that night and I should've suspected something. I got up that night to check on him - he was standing on the bottom of his cage, fluffed up, I thought he was sleeping. I found him dead the next morning. He was a very special bird.

Re: New here and lost my conure

From the Thread is the Amazon sub-forum, I offer you this Segment (Pray):
Passing of a Feathered Friend,”

As this Thread may likely exist far beyond my involvement in All Things Amazon. I believe that like the leading Segment of this Thread, a lasting testimony (Pray) to the Amazons that have shared our home, expanded our Love, and Understanding of Amazons should be part of this work.

It is not an issue of not wanting to visit and more importantly providing words of support as part of the Bereavement Forum, but my own difficultly in fully facing our many losses over the years. It is a reality of what we have committed ourselves too and each loss returns us to that clarity. When one opens their home to the very sick and very poorly cared for, losses are part of the commitment. I ask not forgiveness, but understanding of not often enough in sharing your grief. For those of you who loss a Loving Feather Family Member, I offer you this Pray “Passing of a Feathered Friend,” that we provide our Loved Ones!

This Segment is Rated: To be Read in the company of close Friends and Family.

May Pease find and stand with you as part of your loss my friends…

Passing of a Feathered Friend
Provided By: Steven (SailBoat), November 2016

“All of us feel such deep sadness when our Parrot friends die, and because they are Animals and not Humans, we are at a loss for words. Often, it is only other Parrot owners who can understand the depth of the loss that we feel with this complex, loyal, and loving creature. Resulting from such a loss, I have placed feelings and emotions into words and found verse to console the loss of my Cleo and since her, other sweet Amazons, in turn; I hope it will speak for all of you.” - Steven

You left this world so quickly. I can hardly comprehend your leaving. Yet there, in my hands, your still body rested — no longer your home. So much I have learned, so much you have taught, your purpose a full measure beyond your size. Comprehensions of your loss still a mist but yet, I know you are whole and happy - now beyond Rainbow Bridge. And so busy you must be upon your green wings, guiding angles to those of us yet to cross. With in my ear, I still hear you, those special sweet sounds of comfort and contentment:

Do not stand by my grave and weep my friend.
I am not here. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glint on snow.
I am the gentle summer rain.
When you wake in the morning hush, I am the swift uplifting rush of quiet birds in circling flight.
I am the soft starlight at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry my friend.
I am not there. I did not die.

My pray for you my beloved feathered friend:

May your body nourish this earth.
May your soul find release and contentment.
May you fly high and free upon wings of spirit.
Rest in peace little green one.

The love and tender warmth of you is a un-full-fill-able void.
I do so much thank-you for creating a space for another, a special place next to yours’.

In remembrance of Cleo, (Estimated) Spring 1959 - May 2003

Re: New here and lost my conure

I'm so sorry you are going through this. I hope you get the answers you are looking for with the necroscopy results. You loved him a lot and never would have done anything to harm him, so no matter the outcome, try not to beat yourself up..They are family, and you have every right to mourn. Again, I am so sorry for your loss.

Re: New here and lost my conure

So many potential reasons, but please allow yourself the benefit of necropsy results. You loved him dearly and whatever the cause, if environmental, was absolutely innocent. Sometimes a necropsy yields a bit of closure if congenital issue, or often the notion parrots are extremely fragile. I hope you have a caring support system at home.

Re: New here and lost my conure

My sympathies to you, Lisa for the passing of your beloved green check conure. You obviously loved him. As much as we love our birds, some things are out of our control. Allow yourself to grieve, birds are very special companions. Warm thoughts to you.

Re: New here and lost my conure

Thank you everybody who wrote supportive words in this thread. I am still waiting on the necropsy report. I took him to the Colorado State University diagnostics lab. I am hoping to find answers and to educate myself of what I might have missed while caring for him.
I don't know how to post a picture here. He was a very beautiful green cheek yellow-sided conure. He had an amazing personality. We got him at a local pet store. I wasn't going to get a pet. But when I saw him, I couldn't leave him there. We went home and did research on what he needs. We returned to the pet store and luckily, he was still there.
The pet store said that he won't warm up to us for at least 3 days. He warmed up in the first couple of hours. I didn't take any single day for granted with him. He made me extremely happy. His vivid energy every day, his beautiful colors, him sitting on my shoulder. My kids and I were saying every day to each other how grateful we are to have him and that we can not believe he is ours.
He was screeching his head off when I was in a different room or when I we were gone. I asked at a local aviary how I can make him more comfortable with us leaving and they told me to whistle to let him know that we were okay when he couldn't see us. So, every time I left the room or the house, I whistled.
His cage wasn't locked when I was at home and he would always find a way to my shoulder. I had to work remotely during the pandemic. I have to do a lot of work calls and he would always be very loud every time I had to unmute my microphone and talk. My colleagues had a good laugh at this.
Anyways, still unthinkable happened. By the way, we didn't do a DNA test. It could've been a girl. Alex. Alex is missed and I don't know how to move on.

Re: New here and lost my conure

You should be able to post a thumbnail pic along with your post. Click the "go advanced" button underneath the text box, then click the paper clip icon. You will then get the "choose file" button, so then click the "upload" button on the right, close out of that box and post. The picture should show as a thumbnail under your text. (Instructions courtesy of Laurasea.) The following link may help you too...

How to Post Pictures

Honestly though, many of us load photos either via Facebook or a free account on Imgur and link them from there. I use Imgur these days since my Facebook page has the privacy settings set so high that the pictures disappear after a month or so. Best thing about Imgur is there's no limit on how many pics you can load up, and it's free.

I lost my green cheeked baby, named Baci (after my favourite brand of Italian chocolates, and it's also Italian for "kisses" ) very prematurely too, and the only things that got me through the devastation that followed were time, the fellowship of this community, a very understanding doctor, and time. I mention time twice because, for me at least, it did take a LOT of time, and an awful lot of tears. Many people who have not had the privilege of loving and being loved by these magical creatures do not understand the depths of grief that follows their loss, but the folks here do and we are here for you.

'Moving on' follows the process of grieving Lisa. You and your family must allow yourselves time to grieve now. Continue to write and talk about your feelings for Alex as you are doing.
