Big or small. Any kind. I WANT A COCKATOO. Looking to adopt a cockatoo or a pair for my dad (yes, he has experience) not willing to spend more then $100 per bird outside of California and $200 per bird within California. They would be going to a great home don't worry. They would be absolutely spoiled with attention.

Hi, welcome to the forums! I can't speak for anyone else, but no, you can't adopt my cockatoo, she's a valued family member. You may have to add another zero to the price you're willing to pay, closer to 2000., I would think. $100. dollars may or may not cover the cost of food for a U2 or a Mollucan for a month. Expect to pay roughly $1000. for a cage and a couple hundred for play stands. Perches and toys will cost you a small fortune, Toos are enthusiastic chewers.

A lot of people who are forced to give up their parrots for various reasons will often ask a rehoming fee, the thought is if you can't afford to buy the bird, you won't be able to care for it.

If you choose to adopt from a rescue, more than likely those Toos will have one or more serious behavioral problems, it requires patience and a skilled trainer to reverse some of these learned behaviors, screaming, biting, attacking, plucking, mutilating. If you do adopt a serious plucker, you can expect the cost of veterinary care to be astronomical. Toos have a reputation for being the most challenging of parrots, there's a reason for that. The commitment is similar to that of adopting a perpetual toddler.

Now that all the unpleasantness is out of the way, why not tell us more about yourself and what other species you're interested in.

Real odd way of going about things. You have probably just about got everyone's backs up with the wording and tone of this so goood luck!

Great home and don't worry, I am a lot! For those amounts I would go have a look in the toy section IMO :)

Is it possible that you meant cockaTIEL and not cockaTOO? They would be closer to your budget. There are several rescue organizations in CA that you can contact. Not sure why you are expecting happy bird owners in a support forum to give over their bird not to mention most all of them are devoted and bonded to their owners and vice versa.

Im not sure why Im even responding to this thread. If your dad wants a bird, HE should be the one looking, not you. Compatability is critical. Let him find the bird he wants, then you pay for it if that is what you are wanting to gift. Better yet, since you likely wont find a bird on your budget (btw, shipping costs several hundred once you get the vet certificate, cage, and shipping fees) why dont you just gift him with toys for his new bird?

Guys chill don't worry. I meant to put 1000 and 1500 sorry I was typing fast... I'm looking for my dad because he works a lot and doesn't have time to be looking through ads...

If yor dad works a lot, and doesn't even have time to look at ads for a bird who will allegedly be his, then he surely doesn't have the time it takes to dedicate to a cockatoo, an intelligent exotic animal on par with a human toddler... not only does he have time for that, but is he truly willing to put forth this much effort once the novelty of to wears off, and real challenges and problems start to arise? I'd read Allee's post above again ;). Toos are not for everyone, or every household. They are not right for even many experienced parrot people, and would make a most irresponsible gift, irregardless of how much experience he has. It's like gifting a small rambunctious child, here's your new lifestyle dad, I hope you like it!

Just something to think about. :)

This post sends up more warning alarms than I care to admit to. Cockatoos require a ton of time. This is non negotiable. Usually, that's the number one cause of a parrot going into the foster system. They develop nasty habits as a way of entertaining themselves. I'd seriously look at a rescue. Apply and see. We all love our birds.

Oh my goodness - "doesn't have enough time to look through ads" but thinks he has enough time for a cockatoo. Simply: No.
Please don't do it.

Lol, are you sure "your dad" really wants a cockatoo? You say "you" want a cockatoo but then name drop your dad...

And I'm sure by now you're aware you're not getting any large parrot like this for $100-200 bucks.

Anyway, cockatoos are probably the most obnoxious screamers in the world! If you haven't already, go to some local places/rescues that may have some and see if you can tolerate them when they're bored and screaming.

Good luck!

You have to realize you are talking to a forum that deals with owners who come here often asking, "Why does my bird hate me?", "Why won't my cockatoo stop screaming?", "How do I get my cockatoo to stop plucking?". I'm not sure we're too keen to give into someone who wants a cockatoo right here, right now, even though said person has experience (how many YEARS of experience, and why is that bird no longer in your father's life?). The drastic change from $100-$200 to a magical $1000-$1500 is a red flag for all of us here. And your dad working too much to put effort into finding an emotionally intelligent animal that will be in his life for the next 50-90 years is also a big red flag on a ship sailing across the horizon, getting larger and larger as it gets closer. .

I think I'd walk the plank on this one.

Not that we aren't saying that there are definitely birds out there who could be the perfect companion for you or your dad! Cockatoos are simply NOT the bird we tend to recommend here because those beautiful creatures are often the ones who end up paying the price when it doesn't work out when all they did was be the kind of bird they naturally are. How MUCH experience are we talking about here when you mention that you/your dad have experience? Because a Tiel or a GCC or some smaller, less emotionally attached bird might be a better choice. They make AMAZING pets, but they are less likely to need the bird equivalent of psychiatric therapy in the long term! ;) Good luck on your search--I do hope you find the bird you're looking for and that you are open to considering all types of birds instead of setting your heart on only one to the point that you won't even think of the others. All birds are such amazing friends.

Actually, I have to be honest here, your instance for us to chill and not to worry comes off as very arrogant which is exactly the OPPOSITE of what makes a good bird owner. And if your dad is too busy to look for himself, I wouldn't let him adopt a stray budgie, much less a cockatoo. You and your dad clearly have no idea what is involved in parrot care, and none of us are eager to turn over our family members to you, no matter how much you want to pay.

Another huge red flag is that you don't care what kind of cockatoo it is. They are all very different and unique. I can't decide if you are truly clueless or an amateur flipper...

Just FYI, this thread is over two months old and the OP hasn't been back since his last post over a month ago. I think he has probably given up for now. :)

I have an umbrella cockatoo whom I love very much, but if I had to do it over again, I probably wouldn't have gotten him. He is like a full time job without any 'sick or vacation days'.

Wait a minute. You were the one who posted that they didn't want a big cockatoo.
