Wanted: African Grey - Dallas-TX

We are ready to add one more African Grey to our family. This time local. We found Kira in south Dallas, TX from a great family. Kira is male African grey (he is very happy, energetic bird). After we lost one (Coco) we decided to stay with Kira for a while but now we are ready. We finally agreed it is time to look for new one. Kira need a friend.
We are looking for re-home, rescue, Dallas-DFW-TX area. Local only.

Hello,

What I've learned here on this forum is, you never get your parrot a friend. You only get another parrot if you want one.
There is a chance that Coco & the new guy/gal won't get along.

Best of luck to you all. I'll be following your progress once you get another grey. Fingers crossed they will adore each other.

Re: Wanted: African Grey - Dallas-TX

I agree with never getting a bird for a bird UNLESS you have the time to attend to each one individually if needed (aka- time to socialize, hang out etc, all in totally separate spheres).

Re: Wanted: African Grey - Dallas-TX

We found one, 3 hours from home. We brought her today. Her name is Itsy, and per info I received the prior owners kind neglected her and she has feather-plucking issues that need to work on. She is very sweet and we hope she will like our home. She has her own cage, and will see Vet next week. Itsy is 17 years old and has band
anyone who went thru feather-plucking issues, please send us some tips how to help her. Per the family, the Vet tested her for diseases and all cleared and she does it due to stress, prior living situation, etc.

Re: Wanted: African Grey - Dallas-TX

I first will try to give her plenty of attention and don't acknowledge the feather plucking, if you catch her do it. Pretend you didn't see, as negative attention is still attention to a bird and they will keep plucking to get attention. Put plenty of wood toys and move toys around frequently as changes environment and they are less likely to pluck. Their are other methods, but try that first. Also have vet do full blood work, to ensure not a underline medical issue. I doubt it medical related and pretty sure it more due to her being bored due to lack of attention due to what I see she plucked. So changing of environment, plenty of toys and attention sure help resolve the issue. Those dowel perches have to go, get some natural wood uneven perches, those dowel perches are to smooth and causes bumble feet over time.

My Cooper was a plucker and took some time for him to stop, he just barber himself taking only the tip off creating a V once in a while, but lately he hasn't much anymore. He grew most of his feathers back thankfully and can fly very well now to top of trees now as before had trouble getting to low part of roof as he partial clipped himself before and relied on me by pointing his head to direction where he wanted to go, now he goes by himself for the most part, mainly to lady next door.
