My son recently bought himself a pair of Bourke's thinking to keep them in the aviary with our budgies. I have heard that this is not a good idea as budgies will pick on the Bourke's. Any one have any experience with this?

I have a Bourke with a pair of budgies and everything is ok. You can try but observe if budgies won't be too aggressive. I've never had problems with them.

I think I may have to keep them apart. I have 10 budgies in the aviary with a couple of quail and they are already picking on the quail.

Thanks for your advice though. It would be different if it was just a pair of budgies but 10 is too many for such quiet birds.

I have seen it go both ways. I've seen adult birds just thrown together and actually be fine (DO NOT DO THAT IT IS A VERY GOOD WAY TO END UP WITH DEAD BIRDS! ) I've also seen a budgie and bourke pair that were raised together from the time they were both pulled from the nest to hand feed where the budgie turned on the bourke and nearly scalped her.

If they are already picking on your quail though, I think you are wise keeping the bourkes separate.

I think it's wise to keep the Bourke's apart from the budgies. Like you, I've read in various places that budgies are too aggressive for Bourke's. Actually, I've read that the Bourke's should be kept away from all birds, as they have such a mild, gentle nature.

I can say from my experience that my pair are very gentle, mild, and pretty quiet, and very shy.
They're most active in the morning, like to sleep during the middle of the day, and at night. Although they have had nights where they've felt like staying up and perching in the window, etc.

But on the whole, it would be wise to be extra protective of them, because of their gentle nature.
Keeping them away from other birds is the safest course.:)
