My budgies are always kissing and cheeping at each other! Plus they chewed on the roof of their nesting box. The female is 5 years and the male is 8 or 9 months. I'm confused!

Are you ready for babies?
Do you want your Budgies tame? Are they health enough to mate? Is the female getting enough calcium?

Just because they want to mate doesn't mean you have to let them

My big question is when will they mate? I'm a little scared she doesn't like the nesting box and will lay her eggs on the cage floor!

Re: I'm confused with my birds!!

So. Many. Questions.
I'm not that clued up on breeding so someone else with experience might comment on age etc, but were the birds hand reared? Maybe they're just not that into each other, not bonding? How's their diet?

Re: I'm confused with my birds!!

Are you trying to mate a middle-aged lady to a pre-teenager? Just kidding.... this parrot spring and the problems it brings along is getting to me.... I don't know if your male is ready to think about offspring already. I hope the experts will be along soon to give you the advice you need.

Is 8 or 9 months to soon for a budgie to mate?

My male budgie is 8 or 9 months is that to soon or just about right? I'm worried about my budgies! The female is 5 and they seem into each other a lot! I'm just not sure about the male. Should I be preparing for babies? They have a nesting box and a calcium block ect. They chewed on the top of the nesting box does that mean they're interested? (sorry about all the questions) Please help! thanks:confused:

A quick google search brought up this, which seems to answer your questions:

Breeding - Budgie Place

And just because you have a male and female who are buddies doesn't mean they want to be husband and wife! My moms amazons have been a bonded pair for 40 years and never mated or produced young (she didn't get them as breeders, just happened to get a male and female). The female prefers humans as the target of her 'affection', the male isn't interested in such activities with anyone lol. Just because they CAN doesn't mean they WILL.

Your male is too young. Please wait until both are at least one year old. Also, why do you want them to mate? Are you going to keep all the babies? Please read the thread in the breeding section called "before you breed" which is about starting to breed birds. I'm having a hard Tim getting it linked here for some reason.

I obviously know nothing about breeding, I've researched into it (quite deeply...but not enough) and, to be frank, I'm sure they are needing MUCH more materials in their breeding cage then what you're describing. Maybe more research could be done if you do plan on breeding? Possibly, finding what are mating behaviors in that particular species? Seeing them interact like they want to mate isn't a guarantee they will. But yeah, hopefully more breeders can help with your dilemma.

How long has the male been in the cage? It's like having someone set you up on a blind date and except you to marry in the next week. Also, I'm not entirely sure but maybe the chewing is just a "foraging" type of thing.

How about we slow down - a LOT, and read this...preferably more than once. ;)

Are you sure your male is even a male?? (Pictures would be helpful). Budgies have a tendency to "love" each other no matter their true gender....

And at the risk at sounding redundant~ is there a specific reason you want them to breed?? Breeding is not an easy task (for the birds or the owners), and is not something to take lightly....please read the thread that Wendy just posted.

Thanks Wendy, my iPad was in full on rebellion mode and wouldn't let me do it!

I want to say that everything in that thread applies to budgies. I am not against breeding, I am myself a breeder and I breed budgies among other things. Budgies are very special and have unique requirements. Just because your pair can produce doesn't mean they should.
