I caught her plucking the pied baby. I heard crying and checked babies. Pied had a bald spot on wing and some minor bleeding. Rex had baby feathers still in mouth. Jet was not in box.

I have only ever seen Jet feed the babies so I know he takes care of them. I'm just not sure how they are going to react when Rex is separated from them.

Right now both are out of nest box enjoying free time. I am with them monitoring them so she can't pluck pied anymore.

I am not knowledgeable on breeding issues, but I have heard (at least with budgies) that if the chicks are left with the parents too long, they can get plucked or attacked. But mom and dad still need to feed them right? Hopefully someone with tiel breeding experience will see your post.

I am not familiar with this breeder, but here is a link that covers parents plucking chicks, and lots of other info. Breeding Cockatiels, candled eggs, assisted hatches, how to make a brooder, how to handfeed baby birds, baby bird feeding schedule, baby bird weight gain chart, weaning baby birds, how to wean baby birds.

It's only been 3 weeks so they haven't been in nest too long. The exception could be if Rex was a breeder before and the babies were pulled at this age to be hand fed.

I have never seen or heard Rex feed the babies. Jet is the only one i see or hear feed them and Jet has fed them on my lap. I know Jet will feed the babies.

Jet and Ace spent about 30 min trying to let Rex out of her new temporary cage.

She is doing the let me out dance. Sign. I feel bad but she has to stay.

I've seen that action before in tiels. The hen wants to breed again. She's trying to run the babies off. I've also had several normal males who are world champs when it comes to feeding.babies. Sa rgent Bailey would feed chicks that weren't even his. I could give him hungry babies any day of the year and he would feed them until he dropped from exhaustion. Don't get me started on how screwed up hen tiels can be. You can always get a normal pair to hatch eggs for you.

So I read at international cockatiel society that Rex might be needing sodium. I fed broccoli and a small piece of Dorito.

Also just prior to the beginning of plucking I changed the bedding because the store was out of what I had been using. I went out and found the old bedding 4 stores later.

I let Rex out of birdie jail next and she spent the night with her babies
So far so good.

Grace, it's entirely up to you what you do, of course, but I personally would be ever so careful leaving Rex with her babies, especially because you KNOW she started pulling their feathers.

I work from home so I am with them all day. I check them after every time she goes in box but she hasn't been in box except once today.

Well that didn't last long. I don't get it she hisses bites and lunges when I peek in. She even fed them today; first time I ever noticed that but still plucks. I guess she can have visitation till dark only.

She is begging to get back to them but won't be allowed tonight.
