Just thought I'd share what's going on at Meika's Safehouse these past two days. This is Sprout. He was kicked out of the nest twice, and one of our friend's brought him to us in a Ziplock container to try to save. He is a little parrotlet that was hatched yesterday morning, the 11th. He had a discoloured belly upon arrival, but since yesterday it is starting to turn a normal colour. He weighs 1 gram. I am feeding him once every hour and a half. He literally takes one drop of food each feed. His crop needs to empty each time, and the formula is fairly runny at this stage. We are unsure if if he will make it since he was kicked out of the nest, but are hopeful. I will update as time goes on.

A question directly related to the subject, I hope...?
When a chick is ejected like this, is it usually thought to be an instance of a parent recognizing a defect, or is it usually just a parental idiosyncrasy, or ... (as I learned to say in statistics classes) error variance: who knows, more or less?

It could be any of those reasons. ..in this case, this is the parents first baby, perhaps they dont know what to do with it, but it also had a really dark belly and always lays on his back so maybe there is a "defect" that they saw that we don't :whiteblue:

Awww, thank you for giving little Sprout a chance! I so hope we get to see him grow up! I am in awe that a bird so small can be hand fed.

Thanks, Meika. Beautiful.

When I was in that red-siskin-captive-breeding-genetic -diversity-reintroduction-project... the babies (which sometimes needed hand-feeding) were less than half that size. It was micro-surgery to feed them.

BIRDS are MIRACLEZZSZ!!!!!!!!!!!!

GO, TEAM SPROUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Thank you for giving Sprout a chance! They are so incredibly delicate at that stage, hopefully it is just parental inexperience.

My adult Goffins abandoned their 4 babies after not more than about 3 to 5 days following hatching. Three grew up to be healthy adults while one was born without a vent and lasted a very short time. One never knows why they ignore a specific chick, but the reasons do not always seem valid.

Just a quick update, little Sprout made it to 5 days before his crop stopped emptying. We tried to do a crop flush but our crop needles were too big for him, we gave him a shot of ACV to get things moving and prevent sour crop but it was too late. As we were massaging his crop he slowly drifted away.
