Leg Bands Question

We were not prepared for eggs this year and it seems like most custom leg bands take about 8 weeks to ship and we would need to put on closed bands within 10 days or so.

Should we just go without bands for this clutch? Or would you do open bands?

We have green cheek conures so I am nervous about using open bands.

Or does anyone know somewhere that can do magic and ship quickly?

The only band maker I am familiar with is L&M Bird Leg Bands though I am not sure how fast they ship.

How far along are the eggs, when are you expecting them to hatch? Are you a prepared hand-feeder should the parents of those eggs abandon/refuse to feed babies? You can always freeze the eggs so they don't hatch, especially if you have no experience raising chicks and don't have the necessary equipment to do so. We just had a member here let her budgies breed without the necessary supplies and they ended up with splayed legs, a problem that many novice breeders experience. They had to be splinted by a vet and I'm sure the bill for going back to do it again and again is not cheap.

So much heartbreak with breeding if you are inexperienced!

They are hatching now. I have all the necessary emergency supplies and although I have never hand fed Conures before I have past experience with other larger birds. We also have an avian vet on standby.

We did not plan on breeding them until next year (they are 2 and 3 Years old) but I did not have the heart to throw out the eggs when she started laying on the floor of the cage. They now have a nest box and are taking very good care of the eggs (6) and the 3 that have already hatched.

The only thing we are still missing at this point are leg bands and L & M seems to take 8 weeks and they will not be in the office until Monday to take orders.

Now I am just trying to decide if we leave them unbanded or not. Conures like to chew so I am afraid an open band would be a bad idea.

Not banding wouldn't be a huge deal if they are your only breeding pair, honestly. Although I have ordered from L&M and I don't think it took long for bands to ship. With it already being well into spring, most major breeders already have their bands for this year ordered, so you would probably honestly be safe ordering them Monday and getting them in time to band most of, if not the entire clutch.

Yeah I agree, I would call them on Monday and get a more accurate ship-date, and if it's going to be too late (NEVER put them on later than recommended, that's asking for problems), then I'd just leave them unbanded, as they are your only breeding pair and the only clutch you've bred. For future clutches, order your bands early and keep them on-hand...

Thank you for the advice. I have a message in for them to call on Monday.

L&M should be able to get them to you quickly, not sure if they would be in time but they might.

I DO NOT suggest open bands for conures!
