To all the breeders out there handrearing birds this season, be extremely careful!

Good friend of mine has been handrearing a group of 5 galahs over the past 2 weeks, and has had a bad stroke of luck. Last week the youngest of the group started falling behind quickly, not eating and appearing weak. That one passed away. All of a sudden this Monday another one passed on completely unexpectedly.

Spent a the whole Wednesday asking questions back and forth until I had a brain spark and asked what kind of bulb she had in the brooder box. She showed me a pictures and thats where I found the problem, TEFLON.

The brooder box was removed and another specialized heat lamp was utilized, since then the other birds have been happy as ever, and eating and being more active than ever before.

If you have a bulb with a red or black coating on it, or has a Teflon reflector on the bulb - Discontinue the use immediately!

Good advice Noah, thanks for sharing that. Yet another reason why anyone thinking of going into breeding parrots needs a mentor!

Thank you for sharing, a great sham about the two birds lost though.

As someone who is looking at setting up a brooder for hand rearing - what bulbs/heaters would you recommend for safety?

Reptile style bulbs, such as from Exo-Terra and Reptile-One are always very reliable brands.
