Please help with 1 & 2 days old ringneck parrots 😭

Hello everyone,

I have a 2 days and a 3 days old babies that I hand feed because their mama is not feeding them..
I'm feeding them every 2 to 3 hourse ... the formula name is Kiki Excellent..
I force the seringe in their mouths because they won't open their mouths.. I don't know if this is normal or not...
One of them have a bloated belly and i guess both are not pooping..
The one with the bloated belly crop did not empty from the last feeding time. I also noted that it keeps its head down.
I am too scared for it 😭 we are in lockdown and no vets avaliable as i know...
What should i do? 😭

Ok this is a true emergency. I raise ringnecks, I’ll do my best to help through here but quite honestly I’m happy to PM you my number or Facebook info so you can call me and I can try to save these babies.

No it is NOT normal and it’s extremely dangerous to force feed any bsby bird but especially a new hatch!

-how warm is the brooder?
- how warm is the formula?
-what size syringe are you using? In fact please post a picture of it! And the brooder!

Also I need a good picture of both bellies. How old were they when you decided to pull them? Where are you located? I might be able to dig up someone closer to you who can help!

I’ve never even heard of that formula unfortunately; are you mixing it according to the instructions?

The brooder is around 35 °c
I mixed the forumla with a warm filtered water that is warm to my touch.
I feed each one half of the attached syringe size

I’m glad you messaged!

First, those babies haven’t absorbed their yokes, STOP FEEDNG THEM! See if mom will take them back; how long have you had them away from her? She wasn’t feeding them because they aren’t ready to be fed yet.

Also you are killing them with that box. They need to be kept at around 37.8 degrees celcius MAYBE WARMER, and with ambient heat, not a light bulb. Again, best thing to do is give them back to mom if she will let you.

What are you using to measure the temp of the formula? It MUST be between 40 degreees celcius and 43.3 degrees celcius. And hotter or colder and you are killing them.

DO NOT FEED until the yellow/gold in the belly under the skin disappears completely!

DO NOT FEED until you have had them in a brooder with the right temp for at LEAST an hour

DO NOT FEED unless you have a proper thermometer to check the temperature of the formula.

All of these things will kill the babies faster than starvation. I’ll post more soon but those are your priorities.

The babies belong to our neighbor... he told me that there were 4 eggs that hatched...the older 2 have died because the mama did not care for them...
i will not feed them for sure &#55357;&#56862;
This is my first time nursing baby birds &#55357;&#56877; i thought i watched enough youtube videos to take care of them but it turned out i know nothing...
I drop some forumla on my hand to test the temp &#55357;&#56852;

That’s also a gavage needle meant to be put down into the crop; do NOT do that, but the extra long tip is also making the formula cool down probably. I recommend getting one with a traditional short tip if you can’t give them back to the mother.

Other than these things if you can find a local breeder to help with your technique that would be good. I don’t think I have any contacts in Jordan, please look on Facebook for local Ringneck groups or any kind of parrot raising groups to find someone close to you who can show you how to properly use your hands, test the crop for fullness, etc.

Testing it on your hand is NOT a safe method. The temp of the formula is crucial. You need to buy a thermometer. I use a “confection” thermometer which is used for cooking liquids and semi solids. I buy mine at Walmart but I don’t know where you can get one locally; try anywhere that sells cooking supplies, or maybe even your neighbors might have one you can use.

Two days is actually not long enough for a baby parrot to starve to death, likely something else caused the deaths of the other chicks.

Also I know I’m being very direct; your babies need help immediately so I’m not taking the time to be gentle or careful of your feelings, but the first time I hand raised babies it was similar; I thought I knew what to do and I took on some babies that NEEDED TO BE SAVED.

It was a disaster. I didn’t have the right equipment and everything I learned on mine wasn’t specific enough for my situation. Several of the babies didn’t survive and it was heartbreaking.

Unfortunately sometimes that’s the situation we have; the baby either dies or we do our best. Even though this situation is not ideal, it is better than leaving them to die. We will do everything we can to support you, and hopefully it will be enough.

feed and live stock stores have baby chicken brooders or radiant heat panels . Thst might be very help fir warmth.
