my cockatiel just layed eggs, what should i do?

guys, i need help right now. i have been raising birds of many kinds for sometime but i have never had the chance of having one of my companions to lay eggs. i don't know what to do.

for the past couple of days, i observed that princess stays inside their nest box most of the time. so just this morning i decided to take a peek inside the box to see whats happening inside, then to my amazement, i saw an egg underneath princess. i don't want to touch the eggs because i am scared that if i do, it might cause some trouble, and princes will not hatch the egg anymore.

hope you guys can help me out like the way you helped me when i was hand feeding Buchog..

weeeee! im sooooo excited! if it will be a success, im finally having a baby ...hihi!...

will post some pictures later...information will be of great help,please...THANK YOU!

Re: my cockatiel just layed eggs, what should i do?

Be observant right now!!!! You need to find out when she laid that first egg. Check again tomorrow to see if she lays a second egg, they lay their eggs at a interval of every other day. So if she lays another one tomorrow, it means she laid the first egg the day before. Record the dates of the eggs being laid. It takes anywhere from 19-28 days to incubate, but the time can be different depending on how they incubate and the humidity as well. When I used to raise them I had some hatching as early as 14 days and some hatching as late as 29 days. I have hatchlings right now if you check my post. I have the 4th one hatching tomorrow.

Let them incubate for a week and check on the eggs using a flash light to shine behind the egg while you observe from the front to check for blood veins. IF you see blood veins, it means the egg is fertile, if not, wait a few more days and check again. I would highly suggest you to provide her with cuttle bone and mineral blocks, she will eat them down very quickly!

If the eggs are fertile, you just wait until it's getting close to hatch time then observe the eggs again, be very gentle!!! You will see the shell being cracked from the inside out, in about 3 days he will hatch out. At anytime if you notice the egg is being chipped or cracked from the outside by the parents or you by accident, make sure you have clear finger nail polish on hand, put a dab on the cracked part in a thin layer then just blow dry with just your breath. Once it's dried, place it back in with momma.

Handfeed part, depending on how early you want to feed, being first time parents you must observe the chick's food sac making sure the parents is feeding them properly. IF not you must intervene to start the handfeeding process, but you can leave the chicks with the parents IF they're keeping them warm. When I used to raise them, I like to yank the chicks out at one week old, but this time I'm doing at 2 weeks old to cut down the feeding since I work all the time. My oldest chick turns one week old Tuesday.

Good Luck! If you have anymore questions just ask away, there's several folks on here that have or is raising babies right now like me.

Re: my cockatiel just layed eggs, what should i do?

i know raising medium sized parrots is different from raising a baby tiel.. if you remember i was the one who asked some questions on how to raise a baby parrot..and i remember your were one of those who replied before...i was able to raise them both very healthy ..thanks for those tips..

anyways, i hope that egg is fertile..i am a bit afraid of taking the eggs out of the nest box for candle lighting, my tiels are a bit afraid of everybody..

if i take out those eggs, will there be no effect to them during breeding?the mommy tiel might force herself from not laying eggs..and what if i check them out and the mommy tiel will freak out and damage the eggs?

this is very funny, all along i thought both my tiels are boys...hehehe!

Re: my cockatiel just layed eggs, what should i do?

I do remember you. The parents may try to attack you, I usually use something to separate her from my hand and eggs. Usually the nest box door is what I use.... checking them will be just fine, no ill effects!!!

Re: my cockatiel just layed eggs, what should i do?

Just let her practice. It may take a few tries. When my girl started laying, it was only 3 eggs, then 4, then 4, and now 6.

Re: my cockatiel just layed eggs, what should i do?

My Alex laid an egg last week and I thought it was just gonna be the one....then 3-4 days later there is another one! This is her first time too! Mikey has given me great advise. I am definately more nervous about it than she is!

Talking Re: my cockatiel just layed eggs, what should i do?

hey i got an update...

yesterday when i got home from work,i went to check on princess nest box and saw another cute little tiny egg inside ...now i am pretty sure the reason why shes laying eggs is because shes pregnant...some of those i know who breeds other birds told me that sometimes, hen bird lays an egg even without a mate, but of course that egg is not fertilized...

ooooooooo, how i wish i cud post some pictures here...!
