Rehoming turned Rescue - long post...

4 Cockatiels 2 males Chicken Little & Charlie, 2 Females Chiquita and Sweet pea. Yellow Sided Green Cheek Conure -Franklin and our now tame, rescued feral Pigeon - Belle.
So what started out as a "re-homing" turned out to be somewhat of a "rescue"

Here's the story:

So I had just walked downstairs when I heard my daughter say "No, we already have 3 birds." I stopped, looked at her and said..."what's up?" She said, oh a person I know wants to get rid of his cockatiels. I said "Oh? Hmm..." She says to me that he said he "wants them gone and if no one takes them he's going to kill them, he can't stand them." I said..."Whaaat??? Well, shoot if he wants to get rid of them that bad, I'll take them, are they male/female? How old, are they tame at all? "Don't know, Don't know...he just wants them gone"

I said, well "if they are free and they come with a cage, I'll take them." She asks..he said he'll even deliver the little *#&%(#....

So he says the cage is to big to fit in his blazer, so I then have her ask, how big is the cage...he said it's about 4 feet tall and 2 1/2 by 2 1/2 squared...so I'm figuring it's one of those cockatiel/conure cages on a stand and make a space.

He said his friend is there with his truck so he'll put the cage in back and he'll be right over.

I'm waiting on pin's and needles...excited and a bit stunned with myself that I'm taking on these birds without consulting with my spouse first. But I just had this overwhelming sensation come over me that these tiels NEEDED me.

About 30 minutes later, my daughter hears the truck and I excitedly step outside and see this HUGE Parrot cage! The 2 scared to death little tiels gripping on the side just screeching. My heart immediately sunk...I couldn't believe they transported them that way, with just a little sheet partially covering the cage.

My heart just about bottomed out when I saw the condition these birds had been living for goodness knows how long. The stench coming from the cage was nausiating.

I had them set the cage on the picnic table in the front yard, I thought I'd ask a couple questions...

"Do they have names?" NOPE...then his friend who drove the truck said "call them dumb and dumber"

I said...awww...poor things...then the one giving me the birds said "these f'ing (using the whole word of course) things wake me up at 6 a.m. when I COULD sleep until 7 a.m. Been dealing with S#(&! tooo long!

He turned to leave and was off the porch and I asked "have they been living inside or outside?" He retorted, "I moved them to the porch last week hoping they'd die, but they still wake me up at 6 a.m.

Jumped in the truck and left...

So with the help of my daughter, we took the cage off the base and set it on the ground and I went to work cleaning this filthy cage that had clearly not been cleaned in probably a year or so. There was so much cemented poo, seed hulls and maggots and the stench...UGH! Took over an hour to get it clean!

I'm shocked that the tiels look so good in all honesty!

We then caught the birds, put them in my old petco boxes and cleaned sanitized the rest of the cage and dishes.

We brought it inside, put it together and put what little they had back in it, I decided NOT to clip their wings just yet as today had been very traumatizing as it was and hand taming them can wait.

My spouse came home I showed him the pictures and told him the story and said "Now honey, I didn't intend on keeping these birds, just taming them and finding them a new home."

He looked at them and said..."nope, they'll live the rest of their lives, SAFE with us." :10: My gosh my man melts me sometimes!

So "honey" sat down and ate his dinner next to them and they happily cuddled up to each other, grinding their beaks and dozing off to sleep. I just melted, they've settled in soo well!

Very very very grateful little tiels.

One likes to walk upside down on the top of their cage, I took a picture to show.

So with this long story I introduce our 2 new tiels...we now have 4 tiels and one yellow sided green cheek conure. :p

Oh, and no worries, I have the "rescue" tiels in quarantene and we we'll be headed to the petstore for some stuff to fill their huge HUGE cage!

In the mean time, I need to think of names...any ideas?

I forgot to include the photo of the one walking upside down on the cage top...soo funny to see a tiel do that...our Chicken Little and Chiquita are "safe" tiels! LOL! This new one almost acts like a conure!

Anyway, I'm just so thrilled with them so far. They melted my heart when they ate and drank and preened and cuddled up next to each other contentendly grinding their beaks like they've never lived anywhere else but with us.

:)

Joy...hmmm...will have to consider that as I think the lighter colored one might be a female...just by vocalizations I'm pretty sure the darker one is a male.

It's so great that you rescued the poor little things. How can people be so cruel to little creatures that just want to love you?
I vote for the names "Lucky" and "Chance" It's very fitting for them.

I couldn't believe it when I saw them in this cage...they haven't tried to get out at all, I suppose if they tried they could squeeze their heads between the bars, but I don't think their bodies could follow...

And I'm absolutely AMAZED at how good they look, because the stench coming from that cage OUTSIDE was enough to make me gag. I actually think that this kid moving them outside onto his porch might have saved them from illness...because at least outside, they could get fresh air, and sick as it sounds, there were lots of maggots...maybe they were eating those...because they had nothing else available to them inside their cage.

I told the kids dropping them off at one point when they were cussing and calling them horrible names...

I said...heyyyy...they didn't ask for this...poor things!

Lucky and Chance...hhmmm....very fitting indeed!

Thank you for giving those babies a great home. It breaks my heart to see how they were living. You are very lucky to have such a understanding man in your life. I wish i didn't have to see things like the pics of the cage when they were dropped off but as long as people think pets are throw away it will keep happening. Thankfully people like us are here to give these birds the homes and love they need. THANK YOU!!!!

I love Joy, Lucky & Chance.

Especially Chance, I think the fella should be named that.

Thank you so so so much for taking on these guys, they do look suprisingly healthy for the condition they were kept in. I think a vet check might be in order soon though? Good luck with your new fids, life just got a whole bunch exciting-er!

Thank you so much for taking them in and God bless you and your husband . God the conditions those poor babies had to live in . I would take them to an avian vet and get them checked and make sure they are okay health wise . Some people should not be allowed to waist our air space and these folks that mistreated these birds sure would qualify for that title :waisted air space . God bless you and your husband again .

I assure you, everything I wrote was absolutely true. I wish I would have taken pictures as the truck drove up, then when they pulled the cage off the truck...if someone could have taken MY picture! I was absolutely horrified...to say the least.

Apparently, my daughter found out, these tiels were a girlfriends...or something. She either no longer wanted them or couldn't take them when she left and he told her he wouldn't take care of them. I think some squabbling went on where maybe she said she'd come get them, didn't show up...that sort of thing. Finally he'd had enough. He said they had them for sale at a yard sale and one person bought 1 tiel...so I guess there used to be 3 and no one wanted these two and he'd had more than he could take with their squawking and so, I ended up with them.

I'm absolutely thrilled with them, they are settling in so well. They chirp and preen and eat and play and although they don't want to be touched at all, they'll sit there and listen while we talk to them. I offer them healthy treats, fruit/veggie...they just look at me funny as clearly they've never had anything but millet and sunflower seeds....perhaps some maggots the last few weeks...ugh!

We have them in the living room/dining room area (open floor plan) so they are near us all the time. They are next to the downstairs computer and one of my kids always seems to be on it...and the tiels watch, and listen and do their thing. :D

Plus all my kids' friends are in and out of the house all day long, so with all the activity, I'm really impressed with their behavior.

I haven't yet decided on names for them yet, I do love the names Lucky and Chance and Joy, Faith and Hope. However, before deciding...I'm waiting to see their personalities evolve and THEN I'll decide.

Thanks everyone for all the support, I feel soo good that I was able to take them and yes, my husband is a dream, he totally understands me and my animal heart. And seein' as almost all our pets are "rescued" for one reason or another, he calls us "The house of rejects" :p
