Could anyone give me any tips on the best way to train my kakariki?
He's a only a few weeks old so im thinkin i best do it all now whilst he's still young.
He's not shy at all, will step up onto anybody's hand but not on command, you kind have to push your hand under his feet, starting to nip a little bit aswell but this only started today (nipped me right on the eye lid while sittin on my shoulder lol) i think he's only testing his boundaries as it wasnt a vicious bite more like curiosity but im unsure on how to correct this behaviour.

Any help be much appreciated
thanks
Jamie

I've never had a kakariki but maybe someone else on th forum can help you. I've played with them before, generally very friendly birds. They're little fireballs though! and aggressive with other birds from my understanding.. sadly I watched one completely destroy and kill a full growl cockatiel and start to eat it :( they ARE meat eaters so make sure he gets that source of protein! as for biting, I'd say set him on the ground since parrots like to be up high.. but kakariki are ground birds so i'm not really sure what to do! haha sorry I wasn't much help! If no one on here can help you, look up pet paradise in Va Beach VA on facebook and post a question on their wall, they keep kakariki's so they may be bale to answer any questions you have about them if no one here can help you :)

You've been a great help. I never knew that they were meat eaters and i have done my research, obviously not enough lol but will definitely be looking into this matter some more now :)
They are '' little fireballs '' as you put it tho, absolutly mad and known for been brats but thats what i love about them, some personality! Some refer to them as the same as a hyperactive child, cant take your eye off them for a minute, they're into everything and rarely settled, but very entertaining!
As for the biting ill jus have to try get it out of him by not reacting to his bites. we'll see how it goes anyway! hope for the best and endure the pain for the time being :( lol
Thanks again! :)

Oh yes! they eat seed and stuff too, they're omnivorous. Feed them mealworms (live). they're a good source of protein for any animal. I've seen them feed the baby kakariki's a bowl full of mealies at a time (there's like... 4-6 babies per stand so a bowl split among them is plenty) It's strange to think of parrots eating meat... but Belu loves chicken and Lucy likes turkey! haha

Haha i wonder how they'd feel if they knew they were eating a relative, each to their own i suppose lol ill have to try him out on a few and see which he prefers, is there any certain types of meat i should avoid that could be potentially dangerous or anything? i currently have him on a mixed seed, vegtables and fruit such as celery ( he cant get enough of that) and apples and carrots also!

Birds eat other birds in the wild all the time! Puck likes chicken, which is what I usually have around. He has picked bacon out of my cobb salads though, but I wouldn't recommend feeding them much bacon... o_O

Red meats (beef, pork, bison, etc) are generally considered more difficult to digest than poultry (for humans too), but if he has a little bit it should be okay, I just wouldn't make it a habit..

Also, I'd suggest putting him on pellets (like Harrison's) instead of seeds.

They can also disassemble a jeep with a flock of them...I had a female once, she was not tamed but eventually she wanted to play with is and she never bit or attack any other birds we had. She became quite friendly towards us that we were able to pet her and she hops right on your finger to come out. You train them just like with any other birds. You go from their chest, not feet! Repeat the stepup command. They're very very smart little birds!!!

Yes they are very smart little birds, but what they lack in size they make up for in personality lol!, ive been using that technique since today with the step up to the chest and you can see he is already responding to it tho i presume this is gonna take at least a few days to perfect!

is there any advice on how to stop him biting you'd have? its a not an attack as such, just think he wants to know if im edible lol

@ Remy, Yea thats brilliant thanks for the tips :) ill upload pics asap! Hopefully tonight if not 2moro, gorgeous little birds :D

I can't remember if I posted this or not but... kakarikis CAN talk! and they learn fast too! they learn what they want (like all birds... stubborn.. haha) but they most certainly can clearly speak human :)

PS: HE IS BEAUTIFUL! <3 I think kakariki's are some of the cutest little birds when they're babies. I love the patches of green and yellow on his wings :)

How old is he? Is he's young, he's tasting and testing everything if he's young. Going through the toddler stage. You just have to keep on telling him no if he starts to bite. If he's just tasting, can't tell him no for that!

He's only about 8-9 weeks old maybe a lil more but not much, very young and yes its only tasting, its not the fingers i mind so much i can deal with that! it's when he sits on my shoulder and starts munchin on my ears that hurt haha so not to sure on how to correct that.
