How long have you had him? They should be given time to adjust to their new settings for a while before you try to interact. Let him see that you are the one who brings food and cleans up the cage.

Will he take treats from you?

Re: Just Broguth a indian Ringneck Parrot need help with taming it

Some people would recommend wing clipping and while I see nothing wrong with this and it could help it is not the only means.

I'd start with a shaping technique. Get some treats he likes and put one out at a time far enough away from you so he will come get it. At first this may be across the room but gradually progress to closer and closer. Don't react or try to do to much interaction at first; just place the treats closer and closer to you so he has to approach. When he has to get right next to you to take the treat begin talking quietly to him and work your way up to where you are holding the treat on the floor (or couch next to you) so he can walk up and take it from you hand.

This whole process should proceed one step at a time, and it will likely take many repetitions every day for several weeks. You want him to get used to being close to you but it should be on his terms, encourage and wait for him to approach you, don't chase him. Also through this process as I suggested you should not really react when he comes to get the treats - he needs to see there is no trick, no gimmick, just a treat and you are no threat.

Re: Just Broguth a indian Ringneck Parrot need help with taming it

My ring neck female WAS the same way. I let her out her cage for the first time today! She did amazing well.. I have picures that i'm going to put up on the site so you all can see... she is calming down a lot.. My ring neck I've had for about a month or so.. and well she used to THROW herself to the sides of the cages when you even walked in the room or ANYWHERE NEAR her cage. Needless to say... she is now allowing me to change her water and food without flipping out.

How did i do it you ask? I spoke with her through the cage at a comfortable distance but close enough for her to know i was speaking with her (due to have 3 other birds in the same living room) Everyday i'd spend bits of time talking with her and whistleing with her and such. She is slowing progressing to settle in. Ring necks take a while i'm assuming.... so just bare with him. EVERYTHING takes TIME. Good Luck!

(BTW, i didn't win her over with treats... ) hehe

Re: Just Broguth a indian Ringneck Parrot need help with taming it

If you are going to have his/her wings clipped then i suggest having a professional do this as your bird may never fully trust you if you do it yourself. As cruel as it sounds it might be necessary,I have only ever done it once to my Indian Ringneck which was enough to create a bond and have him fairly tamed. His feathers have grown back fully and he can fly around perfectly now. But remember it is not the only option, you can stick it out and slowly work your way to gaining his/her trust by using treats and speaking to him/her in a soft and gentle voice. It may be a long slow process but all birds can be tamed its just a matter of time.
My Indian Ringneck absolutely loves almonds, you could try this to see if your bird likes it. Maybe start by putting a couple in his/her food dish and seeing if he/she eats it. If so, then you could try to only feed it to them by hand through the cage bars. If they are having real difficulty with your hands being around them try putting on a woolen glove or something of the sought, not too big though as they might be frightened. Some birds may have bad memories of people grabbing them with their hands and if you cover the skin it might not recognise it in the same way. Constant praising as well will also help. If you cant feed it through the bars at all it might not be ready for this yet. Try just sitting next to the cage and watching television or reading a book (you could even read it out loud to your bird) until your bird is comfortable with you being close. When your bird is curious enough to come over to you he/she is becoming more comfortable and trusting. Just speak to your bird in a soothing voice and slowly work up to feeding him/her through the cage bars.

Hope this helps.
Good luck.

Re: Just Broguth a indian Ringneck Parrot need help with taming it

What I did with my indian ringneck was I set my hand on the ouside of the cage for a few moments at a time, and once he was used to that I let my hand go inside the cage. If he is really freaking out then he might have territorial aggression which means you are going to have to go very slowly. Mine had territorial aggression- but he dosn't anymore. Also he could be afraid of you. Try giving him peanut butter on a chopstick.

Heya

I have the same issue with my Blue Indian Ringneck would love to get him/her tame but he/she wants nothing to do with me... I have had him/her since last year Nov.

I recently bought a Baby Sun Conure the other day called Kiwi.. 5 weeks old and already love it to bits.
