Indian Ringnecks v Alexandrines

Hi Everyone,

Can anyone tell me which, in your opinion, makes the better pet bird. I raise IRNs but have heard good and bad things about Alexandrines.

Do Alexs go through the bluffing stage as badly as the IRN?

IRNs tend to be a bit aloof and prone to being antisocial - don't particularly like cuddles etc. Are the Alexs more human orientated?

Any info would be appreciated!

not sure quakers and indian ringnecks are restricted in a few states here in the US a local bird vendor here in my town got fined $6000 for having 8 Indian ringnecks, the write up stated that the shop was passing off as another type of parakeet. And I know I heard some time ago that the state of Pennsylvania was considering outlawing quakers (the bird) but I'm not sure where they got with that

California Condor? Never heard of it!

I was just messing with you The California Condor is the largest land bird in the US which had a little numbers issue back in the 1980's. There are reported to be about 350 left with 180 of those in the wild.

I think they are very similar to a ringneck from what I have read. Alex's are very happy to sit on your shoulder while you walk around, or sit on their play gym.

As for the bluffing, yes they do go through bluffing as well, but not sure how bad.

Someone else might have more to add.

LOL Knew you were! But still would make a great 'watch dog'. With a face like that only it's mother could love it!

Hey Im new to the site i also live in Aus (northern NSW) I have had my alexandrine for about 2 years now she is a great pet but she can get very bitey when she wants to.I find mine has a bit of cage aggression and doesnt like you near her when shes in the cage but when shes out she will happily sit on my shoulder for hours!!She loves attention and can be very noisy when she thinks you arent giving her the attention she wants hehe. I have never owned a IRN so i cant really comment on the differences between them

. I do however own an Eclectus parrot and i find her alot friendlier then the Alex

I have never owned a IRN or an Alex. I have met an Alex before and he seamed like a real nice bird.

About cage aggression, try not to be near the cage, when the bird is in it. That is his "home" and space. Even when cleaning it, rather he be outside. You will notice a change almost immediately.

Hi, I just posted a long reply to an Alexandrine question about feathers. Please find it and read waht I wrote about temperment. I think the Alexandrine are GREAT birds!! I have a 2 year old han raised female that is a love. She cuddles and talks and is very sweet. I did have to work with her a little at the start to warm her up to this degree but she is great. She is faril independent and happy to do her thing ( play - eat - eat - eat - explore ) but this type of parrot need to be handled several times a day to stay this sweet ( not always on me sometimes just on a stand near by and often for just 10 or 15 minutes at a time 2 or 3 times a day ) She does love to be out and about and does not like it when I lock her in her cage. She spends most of her day climbing in an out of her cage and walking over to my other birds cage for a visit.
