African Grey, Yellow Headed Amazon and a Budgie
A budgie flew into my room 6 weeks ago. It had no tail. Now part of his tail is growing but, crooked. I thought I would write about it but first I looked to see if it is a common thing. First thing I saw was curled feather and beak disease. I had a panic attack!! I wanted to write a funny story about this little bird that I named jinx. I had no idea there was a disease. I have 2 Parrots and a terrible cough. I took him to the vet today and he is healthy but, i read they can carry this disease. Does anyone know the statistics or anything about how often this happens re when they carry this but, don't show signs? The vet said she thinks he has an accident with his tail and it does not appear to be growing back. All I could think is someone let him go because they thought he had something wrond. I guess he or she is a resessive pied. The vet says it is a baby and couldn't tell if it is a boy or girl.
I love this bird and pray there is nothing wrong.

Welcome to the forums.....

While there is a lot of experience around here, really, only your veterinarian can advise you whether a bird has a disease of any sort. Since you don't know the bird's history, there is always the possibility that its tail feathers will grow back...only time will tell.

As part of their self-preservation system, you can grab a bird by its tail feathers or step on its tail and a bird fearing for its life can release its feathers...though not a conscious action, its body will release them, with no damage to the bird & it just flies away.

Since it sought refuge in your room, just take care of it & enjoy whatever time you have with it.....

Just my .02 but I'd keep it far away from your other birds for at least 30 days. Unfortunately people releasing their budgie isn't all that uncommon. That's how we ended up with ours... And then we felt obligated to get it a friend, so now we have 2.

Welcome to the forum. I am betting the tail was an accident or a result of abuse/neglect, however, he should be quarantined away from your other birds for a month AND tested for PDD (the disease you speak of) by the vet. ANY bird can carry or catch the disease, but from my understanding, it's not *as* common in budgies as in other species. Still better safe than sorry, especially having 2 healthy birds you must consider the safety of.

Best of luck with this little guy! Sounds like he was meant to be with you!

Hello and welcome! Maybe the little fellow released his tail feathers to escape his former owner. Lots of ways for a bird to lose their tail feathers, no reason to automatically think the worst. I would love to see photos and hear more about all of your birds.
