I have umm.. an embarrassing question… I have about 6 mo old 2 budgies (brothers), and one of them is extremely friendly with my other birds, but he is now trying to mate with everything that flies! :11: He was first in love with my lovie, and now he adores Parry, my gcc, who we think is male. He is really a big heart and very loving little fellow. :) Franky (the budgie) mates with the lovie several times a day (she seems to enjoy that, but it doesn't seem right to me) and gets really annoying around Parry, who is wearing a collar and bandage for his injured toe.
It's all kinda funny, but I think Franky really needs a mate. Or is this behavior just hormonal and will pass with time? if I get a new budgie she'd be on a quarantine for a month anyway. None of my other birds have problems like that. The other budgie is kinda observer type…
I hate to have a breeding situation at home, but the poor 'lover' really needs a mate IMHO. What do you think?

Are you keeping all of these birds in the same cage?

Yes, I'm pretty sure Franky is on a hormonal rush and it will pass.....I have a sun/nanday pair that do their share of practicing, but all eggs have been duds.....

If you have all your birds in the same cage, you could be inviting trouble...if they're not in the same cage, just keep Franky separated until his hormones quell until the next time.....how old is Coco? She may be a potentially unknown variable in this mix, hormonal female lovies can be dangerous to other birds they have access to, including Franky.....

I'm not sure bringing another budgie into this situation would be the right thing to do.....just because Franky is hormonal doesn't mean any hen you may bring in would be hormonal also...and...you say you don't want to set up a breeding situation, so you've answered your own question, so NO, I think you would be making a mistake bringing in another budgie.....

Thank you! All of them are pretty much cage free during the day, and yes, the lovie and two budgies are kept in the same cage - they came from the same home very young and became too bonded to keep them separately. I tried to keep the lovie separately at first, but it didn't work. She doesn't seem hormonal though - she is sweet and friendly as usual and loves to spend time with me. It seems like she is trying to find a place for a nest, which is quite impossible. :) Or maybe she is just exploring - she always checks everything out. She is not interested in Franky very much, but preens and "kisses" him when they are together. I sometimes put Franky in the cage when he gets too annoying with Parry, and he screams like crazy when he doesn't see him. When Parry was very sick he spent all the time in the box with him. The weird thing is that Franky loves Parry most of all and and always is around trying to feed and to preen him, but mates with Coco! Isn't that strange? Funny things happen in bird communities... Thanks for advice - I really don't want to get another budgie now. I'm also afraid that Coco might abuse her.
