Cockatiel- Kalypso
Do cockatiels need cuttle bone? I am fine with providing it, I just did not want to give Kalypso something that wasnt good for her or she wouldnt use.

You are not required or forced to, its just an extra source of calcium for them. Also, a way for them to trim their beak down a bit. So, if you're giving her all the calcium in fruits and veggies that she needs, you wouldn't HAVE to. Hope this helps :)

Mine has it, but he never touched it, so I probably would have to remove it soon. None of my birds even nibbles on them. :(

My birds all have cuttlebone in their cages, and almost all of them really enjoy it. I like knowing they are getting that extra calcium in their diet as well.

We are working on veggies and fruits. We are also working on swithching off of seeds to pellets. I will get some just because and a plus is that it isnt expensive.

I would highly recommend getting cuttlebones. She might not like them at first but they KNOW when they need it. Since Kalypso is a girl she a high chance of laying eggs (which should best be avoided) and they need a source of calcium to help produce them. Without it, theres a high risk of egg bounding. I think of it as either spending 5 dollars on a pack or a few hundreds on an emergency visit. Even if she doesn't like it, I'd use the powder one and sprinkle it on her food.

There is a parrot toy company called Planet Pleasures which incorporates cuttlebone into many of their toys. The boys love the cuttlebone pieces as a toy. Their products are unique and made of all 'natural' materials and hand crafted by villagers. I LOVE their toys. I have a swing too. All my guys love their Planet Pleasures stuff. I think I'd pay attention to extra calcium too, if I had a female.
