Male or Female

Hi, I am new in this forum and I just registered. I read some threads and it was very useful for me. I bought these two parakeets yesterday. I asked them to give me one male one female, but it seems it is not easy to say if they are male or female when they are young. I was just wondering if you can help me with this. Is this possible to say the gender now? If yes, which one is male, which one is female? I have attached a picture of both of them.

Thanks.

How old are they? When they're young it's hard to determine the sex properly and correctly. But from my guess, the right looks like a male and the left looks more like a young female--a good indicator is a tan hue. However, as they get older, their ceres might start changing colors. Esther (the male) was originally called a female at first, thus the name but after a year you could really see the blue.

Either way, they are beautiful!

Beautiful birds you have. Check this link out. It will explain a little of why it can be so complicated. I have a recessive pied mature male, and has been DNA sexed and has a pink cere because of his mutation. The one on the right you have is a dominant pied. This website below has many pages, you might browse through it and find more info. If you need to know for sure, DNA sexing is the only sure way at this age.

yep, it's tricky when they are so young. Both look like males to me. Females have distinctive white around the nostrils as far as I know. My two boys looked like this.

Thank you guys for the answers. I think the right one is about a year and the left one less than 6 months. I had parakeets for several years when I was younger, but I was not very serious about taming them and having them breed, this time I want to tame them and help them to breed. This is why I am very interested to know the genders.

I'm just curious why you want to breed them? Do you know what to do, and what you'll do with the babies? Beware that Budgies often carry genetic weaknesses from generations of random breeding. They're nice little pets without the complication IMO :).

I am just thinking of doing something more exciting and challenging other than just taking care of them or taming them. ;) I don't know a lot about it, but I assume I can learn and experience.
