Birdie Independence

My cockatiels wings have grown back in. She came to me with wings clipped. Now that all except for a few wing feathers have came in she can fly. She flies very well for a bird never taught to fly. I think the Independence that comes wth wings has gone to her head. She flies every where. When I go to put her in her cage she tries to fly out sometimes successful. She also flies to me if she doesnt want to play or attempt to play. Im glad she is confident but I would like her to listen a little. So have any of you expierenced this and if so how did you work with your fid on it?

Nope. Mine is 16 y/o and has yet to take flight

. He's a kiwi bird alright, a small flightless bird (though not of the variety native to New Zealand)

I would recommend recall training (i.e. bird comes when you call). Lots of free youtube videos explaining the basics of how to recall your bird.

I knew cockatiels are good flyers but I have never seen a bird turn or do a full 360 so quickly. Its amazing just a bit of handful.

April is right. You want to start working on recall training with her. Stay put training as well.

I'd suggest limiting her distractions and flight area during training sessions. Take her into a bedroom where there are less places to which she might fly. And then work with her in 15-20 minute increments using 2 simple training perches.

The limited space and reduced distractions should help with the training. And scheduling these sessions between meals will add motivation to the treats you offer as rewards.

I am going to have to look up some videos of stay put training never seen it done. I will take her into the bathroom and start recall training her.

Check out Barbara Heidenreich. She has tons of helpful, positive reinforcement videos out there... including stuff on stay put training.

Please keep us updated on your progress, and remember to try and always end your training sessions on a good note.
