hello all. I am new here. I have a parakeet around 6 months old I adopted from a neighbor. She got 4 from a woman who happened to have way too many birds. Possibly a hoarder? Anyway we are working on taming but its a slow process as he is 6 months old and pretty hand shy at this time. We did manage to get him to sit on our fingers a couple times with treats but he was nervous and it didnt last too long. All in all hes doing really great though. We love him. :yellow1:

Congrats on your new baby and welcome to the forum! My mom's budgies will sit on her finger for millet spray. And when I was working with one of hers after a few weeks he let me bring him out of the cage for a short time before flying back. It takes patience though and remember to let the bird decide to step up, this builds trust rather than pushing on their tummy to knock them off balance to step up. You want all the interactions that a untamed bird to have with your hand to be positive reactions and to build trust and confidence. Your bird will decide when he/she is ready. Please post pics! With patience and time, you should find a friendly little feathered friend to interact with.....

Although you were able to get it to temporarily step up, that could be because you didn't threaten it.....it normally takes weeks and/or even months to hand tame some birds.....best, for now, to not try so hard to get your new friend to step up...you can offer it treats & let it come to you...don't worry, it's the way birds are, unlike puppies & kittens, birds need to develop a trust bond with their companion humans.....

This is a post from one of our forum member. Its very detailed and informative. I have a conure that was also untamed and very frightened. I followed these techniques and in 3 months she loves being handled and is a very social and loving bird. We still have some issues to iron out but all will come in due time.

Don't lose hope...if it takes longer, so be it....let the bird set the pace.

thanks for the replys. I will check out that link. Yes I think it will take some time and lots of patience on our part. I am trying to let him do things on his terms. I keep the cage door open for an hour a day and he decides if he wants to come out or not and goes back in when he is ready. He flew to me onto my lap this morning just for a minute. It was so cute. Hes still very timid but I can tell he is gaining more and more trust little by little.
