My quaker parrot lost a toe today :(

She and the budgie were playing together on top the cage when it happened. I didn't see or hear it happen but noticed it very soon after. Went to vet, got stitches, antibiotics, pain meds. Seperated the birds at least until it heals so budgie can't pick at it.

The vet thinks a budgie can't bite hard enough to remove a quaker's toe. It came off at the first joint. I looked for any evidence of where she might have got caught in the cage but found nothing conclusive.

So what do you think? Can a budgie bite off the tip of a quaker's toe? They are normally good friends and I don't really want them seperated but now I'm worried it could happen again.

I honestly don't know. I know my budgie has bit me like he meant business but has never broken my skin.

Yeah me too. I've had budgies bite hard, not this one, and they can get a good pinch but never made me bleed. Then again, maybe our fingers are tougher and bigger than a Quakers toe.

Right now she seems more concerned with being by her buddy than missing a toe.

Ouch! I'm sorry about your poor quaker's toe! That must have hurt!

My quakers, cockatiel, and two budgies spend a lot of time out of their cages together in the same room and we've never had an accident. Honestly, I've never worried too much about the budgies hurting the quakers, but I guess a budgie beak could damage a tiny quaker toe. I hope Niimi's toe heals quickly.

Hi Aandeg, good to see you, but I am so sorry to hear about your Quaker's toe! I'm surprised it was done by a budgie, but I suppose that it was able to happen since it was right at the joint as you say. It's unfortunately a pretty common thing to have happen with multiple birds. Griffin luckily has his toes, but he is permanently missing two nails because of Robin.

I'm with everyone else, in that even a budgie who means business and bites as hard as they can, has never been able to bite hard enough to draw blood on my hands.

Sounds like Niimi is all fixed up and in good hands. Best wishes for her speedy recovery :).

The most painful part was the vet bill. But it really needed a couple stitches so I'm glad I took her. I can eat next month. :)
