Should I get a second cockatiel?

I've always had my budgie Jupiter and my cockatiel Aries who were roommates (but had a flight room). They've been together for six years, a few days ago Jupiter passed away at the age of eight years old (natural causes.)

Even though Aries is hand tame and loves hanging out with me, he seems aware that Jupiter is gone. He usually whistles in the morning around 8-9 AM with Jupiter to wake me up, but ever since he passed away he's been quiet these past few days unless I give him treats.

I've considered getting a second hand tame cockatiel from the same store to keep him company while I'm at work, but do you think this is a good idea?

It's so painful to watch when a bird is grieving for a lost flock mate. I'm sorry you and Airies are going through this. One of my Quakers is missing her friend that passed recently and she has other flock mates. If I were you I think I would wait at least a little while before making the decision. I think cockatiels appreciate company from other birds more than many other species do. I think it would be good for you, Aries and the new addition when you've had a little more time to process your loss.

Thank you, I realize this would have been a spontaneous decision.

I would have to first wonder why Jupiter passed on.

I agree with Allee though. If you were to get a second bird, you would need to make sure the second bird is healthy before introducing him or her to Aries, and you also need to realize that Aries and the new bird may not get along.

Sorry to hear of your loss of Jupiter. :(
