I just have to share this story with someone.
When a companion bird goes missing it is so much worse than a cat or a dog, anyone will take those animals in, but birds are so often dismissed as wild or in no need of help. You can't help but imagine your feathered baby, starving and cold, out there waiting for you, the time running out before he succumbs to a predator or the elements.
But whatever you do, NEVER GIVE UP HOPE.
I've had my boy Meiku, (grey indian ringneck) for two years last friday and he is the most loving, inquisitive, clever little companion that you could ever wish for.
His wings were clipped but have grown back well and he flies around the house a bit (mysteriously always ending up in the fruitbowl). Although he can make it from the couch to the kitchen fairly easily he really hasn't mastered the art and ends crashing most of the time and anything more than a straight line ends painfully.
On saturday it was a nice sunny day and Meiku was sitting on top of his cage enjoying an apple when there was a very loud car crash on the road next doo,r and startled he flew off of his cage. Just then there was a huge gust of wind that picked him up and threw him right over the fence!!
I climbed up on the roof and called his name for hours, we asked every house in the street and searched every garden, every tree that he could have reached. There was no sign of him.
All around my house there are cars, cats, ravens and other predatory birds.
I was so sad and sat on the roof crying all night. That night it was freezing with torrential rain and storms- I thought he would never make it in that weather.
The next morning we searched some more and I put up signs, but he wasn't to be found. There were storms again all that day and night and the local cats were out. By monday I had given up hope but still wandered around the neighbourhood calling him. I was absolutely destroyed.
On wednesday afternoon I got a call from a lovely man saying that a dog has brought Meiku in that day, covered in mud and on the verge of death, nearly 7 blocks away from our house. He had taken him home and fed him and given him shelter and water.
He drove Meiku down this morning and now he is back home, a little shaken after nearly five days in the storms but otherwise fine. He is sitting on the couch wolf whistling and saying "hey Meiku" and "good boy" and I don't think he's ever been happier.
Even when it seems that everything is lost never give up hope.
