Injured Parakeet

My mother has six parakeets, and this morning when she checked on them one was on the bottom of the cage pulling feathers and trying to kill one of the other parakeets. I know the aggressive one is a female and my mom believes the injured was is a female too, but we really don't know. Any way, my question or concern is about the injured bird. It has an injured wing, it head has been pecked and most of the feathers are gone and it has a injury on its beak. After I got home to look at the poor thing, I realized its leg was missing from the joint down.
I told her that maybe this bird was stuck in the cage and pulled its leg off and the other bird seen it injured and tried to kill it.
Our injured bird is eating, drinking and hobbling around a box we have made up to keep it warm. It is curious and even holds its head up to look around the box to get out...it can even fly. We do not have any avian vets unless I drive 3 or more hours. Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas to help our little friend out?

Thanks, Lorri

I am sorry to hear about that, the little budgie sound like a trouper. I don't have a lot to suggest other than to keep on doing what you're doing in terms of keeping him/her warm and comfortable. Lots of high quality food, perhaps an immune booster supplement such as Sunshine Factor. I would imagine the little guy would need antibiotics and a pain killer of some sort but I have no idea about dosage or where you would acquire bird-safe ones. I would call the vet and see if they can offer you any advice over the phone. Perhaps he is too injured to take a trip that far regardless, I wonder if there is another vet nearby who could take a look. Even if they aren't avian, perhaps they have enough training to offer a bit of medication and advice or can call in a consult on an actual avian vet. Good luck, I hope he makes it!
