So, 2 days ago, my fiancee who is a fisherman and home from being at sea decided to help me out and clean up the kitchen for me! (i know, hes amazing!). While cleaning up, he left the back door open and we didnt notice, forgot about it and went to bed.

Next morning, I let the birds out as usual and as i was bringing them their breakfast I noticed a neighbours cat stalking across the lawn with my little cockateil in its sights.....I thought thank god they are safe inside, put them away in their cage and left for work.

So i get home 6 hours later and straight away notice my eccie is OUT of his cage - hes been learning how to open the small feeding doors. So I go in and no sign of Merv, the cokateil. What I do have is a traumatised eclectus, cockateil feathers everywhere and the neighbours cat IN MY HOUSE staring at my eccie with the cokateil nowhere to be seen.....Not knowing the back door was open, hed come in and apparently eaten my poor baby

I was DEVASTATED. My poor little affectionate baby, eaten because we were careless. I cried myself to sleep that night and the next, but put a lost bird notice up online just in case.

Today i got a phonecall, from a man who FOUND MY MERV! She had flown into his window and he had scooped her up just before she was eaten by his cat. She must have managed to fly out the open back door (im so lucky my unflighted eccie didnt get eaten!!)...Turns out the open door was a blessing in disguise - it let the cat in but enabled her to escape!.So shes had 3 days sleeping rough and is VERY tired and VERY hungry and im so so happy to have her home and so so so so grateful to the wonderful man who found her and took the time to contact me. The last 3 days have been hell as i imagined her being eaten by that horrible cat in our own home, i cant believe i got her back, ive been crying with joy haha and my poor partner who was feeling so so guilty (who is now back at sea) is so so so so happy he shed a tear aswell.

Thank god - I know how badly this could have ended and we are so lucky. My heart goes out to all the birds and owners who wernt so lucky. :(:D

Congrats on getting Merv back, safe and well. So happy that it all worked out for you both. Yes, you were very lucky and sometimes its very hard to explain why things happen as they do. Merv sure had her guardian angel looking after her that day. PS. Why Merv Hughes for a name? (maybe the guardian angel is Dennis Lillee or Sir Don LOL. Yes, I am aussie)

How lucky, I'm so glad for you. Since I'm a bird owner, I find I really don't like cats. Extra treats for everyone.

On a second thought, have you spoken with your neighbor about that cat? It is NOT okay for it to come in your house and endanger your pets! It should probably be kept inside if it's going to intrude into peoples' houses and attack their pets. I might even go so far as to mention that you might take legal action if it does anything to your birds.

hmmm yes horrible cat. Not sure whos it is thats the problem......No collar but its a Burmese so it obviously belongs to somebody! Im just going to be xtra specially careful from now on. Was a good wake up call,I tell ya!
My partner wants to shoot it with a BB gun but I think that might be going a bit far...........I think if it happens again im going to grab it and take it straight to the pound!
Its a horrible thought that my poor babies had their sanctuary invaded! Grrrrr! A stressed parrot is not a happy parrot! Stressed parront is not a happy parront lol

p.s before anyone gets upset, my partner was only joking, he would never actually shoot someone elses pet =)

If you find it in your house again, and don't know who the owner is, I'm not sure what the "correct" action would be, but I think taking it to the pound would not be out of the question. That cat has caused you a LOT of grief AND cost you a lot of money! I know it's just following it's natural instincts and whatever, but it should be kept under control.

Maybe you could post a picture of it up in your neighborhood saying something like "Is this your cat? Keep it inside!"
