Think my little Kak could be sick, has had a slightly runny cere since tuesday but i said id just see how he is in a few days as he was fine and seemed quite content flying around and into everything as usual and was told by a breeder that he was fine as along as he was active and jus to bath his nose with cotton wool in cooled boiled water. as the days went on the discharge got less and less although still a little bit there, but just know i noticed a discoloration in is poop, jus a slight green nearly yellow but not quite. has been fluffing up his feathers quite a bit and seems to be breathing through his mouth which i believe is a bad sign for respiratory system!!
Maybe im jus been paranoid and thinking the worst (hopefully)
im gonna bring him to the vet just incase anyway but the thing is its only saturday here now and no vet open till monday mornin
Anyone any help on what i can do if anything to help the matter till then???
thanks very much for any help!!

I am sorry but you should have taken your little bird to the Vet Tuesday before the symptoms got worse. If a runny nose doesn't clear in an hour or 2 it is best to get a Vet to take a look don't wait.

In the mean time, keep your bird warm under some sort of heat lamp or pad. Try to feed electrolytes in water. Also you can try to give a strong dose of probiotics which may help until you get to the Vets. If your bird isn't eating you can get some hand rearing formula mixed in water & feed from a spoon or syringe.

How would i go about feeding him probiotics ? such as what ?
Thanks for your reply

I understand. I think your little guy has a upper respriatory infection & will need an antibiotic. Something else you can try is if you know anyone with a nebulizer. You can use F10 antibacterial solution in the chamber to help fight the bacteria in the airways. Set up a small cage with the nebulizer at one end & cover in a plastic sheet, making sure there is air getting in. You need to do this treatment twice a day for about 20 minutes.

Probiotics are Lactobacillus acidophilus & is a water soluble blend of live microbes. I use it everyday with my parrots.

I very much doubt your little bird is actually eating, a sick bird will sit at the seed bowl & appear to be eating but is in fact pretending to eat. Please keep an eye on that.

Good Luck.

Ok thanks very much for your advice although i doubt ill be able to get my hands on any of that stuff tomorrow, maybe off a friend that breed's birds so fingers crossed,(will definitely be buying my own probiotics etc asap) if not ill jus have to keep him warm etc until i can get to the vets monday mornin! As for the eating ill defo keep an eye on that, i had him eating out of my hand earlier tho no problem to him as did the kids. he does seem quite content and adventurous when he's out so hopefully ive recognised these problems with a bit of time!
Again, thanks very much for your advice!
Much appreciated
Jamie

Could you try calling your vet and seeing if they could get you in for an emergency visit? RI's can go downhill really fast. I don't have any experience with them in birds but I do with snakes. I had a large burmese python get an RI and I had to give him injections every 5 days for a few weeks and it went away, also raised his temp and humidity, but I have had smaller snakes(mainly baby boas) show signs of respiratory infections and within 2 days they had died :( Pedro has given you some really good advice, but I would try to get him to the vet asap and make sure you keep him plenty warm, no drafts! Please keep us posted.

Hey Thanks for your post and concern, i just woke up this mornin and he is full of beans, straight out of his cage and flyin around not a bother on him and into his toys, seems a lot more active than last night. which cant be a bad sign, hopefully he keeps like like this till tomorrow till i can get him to the vet!! there's no way i can get him in today unfortunately so ill just do my best in keeping him warm and such till then.
PS.Im sorry to hear about your snakes, its never easy to lose a pet, the become part of the family :(
All in all rico is seeming much better and more active this mornin so only 24 more hours!! so hope he keeps it up till then.
will keep you posted and thanks again for your advice and concern :greenyellow:

Please go to the vet asap
I lost my beloved cokateil recently in very similar circumstances (and I thought she was fine because she was still eating....i got her to the vet but it was too late). If he looks sick, i.e fluffed up and quiet, he is much sicker than he appears as a rule. They are very good at concealing it, and unfortunately it may be too late by the time you take him in.
It depends on your budget etc. but seriously, with birds its better safe than sorry. Things can change in an instant. Definitly a call at least to the vet is warranted.....just to be on the safe side!
Good luck!
