Rico - Kakariki
Any help on this would be a great help and much appreciated,
Rico is only around 3 - 4 months old and has always been into nipping, but not aggressively! likes to bite people on the ear and ive no idea how to deal with this issue, he's well used to being out of his cage and around people.
Also in the last week he has started to get very protective over his cage and charge at me when i attempt to put my hand in to change his food or water etc, has also been starting to show his aggression out side of the cage in the last 2 days..
I thought this nipping phase would pass as i thought he was just tasting and seeing what was edible lol id discourage him from biting my fingers by blowing air in his face everytime he goes to bite, but now im lost :( someone please help!!

He's a kakariki by the way!

Alexandrine parakeet (parrot)
Hi! my alexandrine gets nippy when I put my hand in cage also. I open the door and let her climb out as I step back and move across the room. I give her a few minutes to get a good feather shake, do her customary cawing crow sound she does in announcement she's out and happy. Then I move in to get the food and water bowls. She's usually comfortable after that initial few minutes and curiously wanders to cage front and peers down at me from height of cage top. She will climb down the side reaching out for me to then accept my hand of help in perching her on my shoulder. She comes along into the kitchen where I wash the bowls, dry, and refill under her watchful gaze. She will occasionally beak at my earlobe but hasn't ever bitten bad enough to draw blood but she sure can pinch when she's in the mood.
When Holly is at her worst I pick up a pillow off the couch laying it atop her cage. She's learned when that pillow is lifted she best stop her nipping and avoidance she'll come directly to me. I present the back of my hand while fingers are closed in a fist, no biting surface for her to get ahold of. She resigns herself to being put in cage. If this fails? Out comes the squirt bottle filled with water. usually one or two blasts in the chest she calms right down and corrects her behavior.
I hope these measures will help you in devising methods to show Rico who is boss. Good luck!

Thanks very much for your reply i will definitely be trying these techniques in the future :) but i think i need to go back to basic as to getting him to step up before he leaves his cage so im told, which i very rarely do and results in me having to chase him around the room trying to get him back in his cage, he has never drew blood either but like holly he certainly knows how to pinch lol
This is my first bird so please forgive my ignorance :p lol #
Also jus another quick question, would you ever feed your bird fish or any seafood for that matter?? i hear not tuna because its too high in mercury ??
Thanks again and hope holly is doin well!
:D
