Here come the babies :)

After losing Maude, our older blue budgie last night we were both kind of bummed, I was also a bit antsy since today marked day 19 since Daphne's clutch was laid and still no signs of pipping. Well, I checked the box for the first time today about 30 minutes ago, no signs of pipping, still no babies, not what I was hoping to see. Then, my other half gets home from work, I guess he didn't realize I had just checked on the eggs and he snuck a peek while over in our breeding room. Next thing I hear is, "We've got a baby!" I was sure he was just messing with me but I could tell the excitement in his voice was real. I just sat there and said, "are you sure, can't be! I just checked 20 minutes ago and I didn't even see the slightest crack in any of the eggs." Sure enough, I walk over to see this

I'm so excited! Not only because we have new babies but because we lost maude yesterday and then today her grand birdie decides to pop his little head out. (the father of these babies is Maude's son)

Oh, I'm so excited for you! And I'm sorry for your loss of Maude, but I bet it helps to see her grandbabies hatching.

Re: Here come the babies :)

Oh wow , congratulations IcyWolf !
How exciting for you Are you going to hand feed any of them ?
Love those tiny little peep sounds
I didnt pull my hens quick enough and i have two clutches hatching !
Both hens laid ten eggs each and i have had great luck with most if not all hatching , so I am definitely in for the long haul.
I have a friend who has a aviery and she is willing to take most of them , so I am grateful beyond belief for that , lolol.
I do have a few friends lined up for homes too

Enjoy your new hatchlings

Re: Here come the babies :)

Thank you to everyone for the kind words and shared excitement. Maude and her mate Harold(still with us) were the oldest birds we had. I have no way of knowing how old they actually are because they went from a retirement home, to a nurse that worked there when their owners passed, then to a friend of mine, and then eventually to me. Harold seems to be in much better health than Maude was, but I suppose that is to be expected since prior to me bringing her home, she was allowed constant access to a nest box for at least two years and ate nothing but wild bird seed, so I'm sure her little body was quite drained. I actually just got her to start eating veggies in the past two months so I was pretty excited about that. I'm guessing that she had to have been at least 8 and with a lifetime of bad food and near constant egg production I suppose she lived a pretty long life for a budgie. I was worried that her mate might get lonely so he has a new room mate now, our other loner budgie, Barnaby, is now living with him. They lived together before so I figured it would give them both some company and they have been getting along great, they are sharing a perch as we speak). It's kind of ironic that it all happened this way if anyone has ever seen the movie "Harold and Maude".

@luvmytoo- ten eggs?! That's incredible! I thought this was a nice sized clutch with six(all fertile from what I could tell). I will be pulling them at around 14 days to hand feed and I have a guaranteed home for at least one, and I have many others that have contacted me about them, I'm just waiting to see how many actually hatch and survive(fingers crossed) before I actually commit anymore to anyone. It's pretty cool, the man that has one reserved is actually a magician and wants a hand fed baby so he can train it to use in his magic show! After I posted the picture his response was "I am a dad!" so I'm sure he/she will have a great home. And I'm excited at the possibility of being able to see one of our babies perform!

Ugh, I just want to look at him again, but I'm holding down my excitement and letting momma do her thing. When I saw him and took that pic, he literally just came out of that egg, I don't think he even stretched his neck out yet, in the picture he looks like, "Okay, I take it back, I wanna go back in the egg now!" as he's all curled up and sitting with the other eggs This was today 19 for egg number one, so hopefully we will have more babies popping out in the next few days

Re: Here come the babies :)

luvmytoo, 10 eggs each?? Oh, my goodness! You will have your hands full!

I do have the daughter of my first horse, which I think helped me when mom passed. She doesn't look like her mother, but is very similar in personality. She looks like her daddy, who has also passed. So she is like having the best of both of them.
