Looking for help from budgie experts. My aunt's budgie Frankie has started throwing his food all over the cage. He is a fed a packaged seed mix though I have no idea what brand. His diet has not been altered. But within the last few days he has started throwing his seed everywhere and, according to my aunt, making quite a mess. He appears to be himself (although I didn't get confirmation that he was pooping normally).

What's going on here? I don't own a budgie (I have a lovebird) but if this was my bird, I'd be pretty worried.

Thanks!

is he eating normally, just being messy? maybe he is bored and needs more toys or outside cage playtime?
my budgie was the fussiest bird and i had to feed him the exact same thing. if i offered something different, fruit or whatever, he threw his food all over. he was also funny about how he kept his toys. (he had one bell that he liked the clapper jammed up into it so it didn't ring. if i 'fixed' it, he went right over and put it back how he had it). But then Georgie my sun conure threw her food around oftentimes for fun. I think she was messing with me!

Pepsi and sprite, both are American male budgies
He's probely a little bored. Whenevr i give my budgiesnsome seeds as a snackMy budgies will throw the hulls of the seeds onto the floor. It drives me CRAZY , when I'm done sweeping and I go to put the broom away THE HULLS ARE THIER AGAIN. I am sure thier saving thier seeds for whenever I sweep. It's a natural instinct. In the wild budgies keep thier nests extremely clean. In your case he's not throwing it out of the cage in the cage. You should only start to worry when he isn't eating. If you want him to stop I suggest getting him foot toys. Ugh Pepsi just jammed a seed hull down my shirt while I'm writing this. :greenyellow:

How much seed is in the cup? I have noticed that Budgies will "dig" in their seed cup, scratching & sending seeds everywhere, when there's a lot in the cup. Try emptying the cup more often, and/or not filling it so high.

Thanks everyone. I think you were right about boredom. Funny that he's been living in a little cage in a small room with no toys or interaction for the last five years and only now he is voicing his displeasure by flinging seed around. My mom checked on him today and told my aunt that he needs more toys to shred and play with. This birdie might need to be re-homed some day. My mom says that her grandbird (my lovie Basil) has it so good living with us compared to this little budgie.
