yesterday morning I was woken up to funny sounds coming from my cockatiel cage. As I laid in bed I thought to myself 'uh oh....I know that sound....I took a quick peek under the cover and low and behold my very young cockatiels, are mating. Num Num was my very first chick I raised in cockatiels, almost a year old. his mate, Pearl is maybe 9 months, but that is a guess. I don't think she is younger, but may be a little older.

this morning they were back at it again. Now I'm worried, she is far too young to be nesting. I don't know if Num Num is shooting bullets or not, but I've never had a couple breed this young of age.

what am I in for? all my birds receive daily calcium powder on their food, iodine in their water, and loads of very good food. Pearl is a good size, and healthy. I put up a nesting box, but wondering if I should take it down?

I would love for them to raise chicks but it is way too soon.

Looks to me you've set a pretty good stage for this to play out & if Num hasn't yet learned how to properly load ammunition, they will at least have the benefit of practice...you know, practice makes perfect.....

yeah, practice makes perfect at 6:00 am!!....geez, can't they do it a little later lol,...the nesting box was put up after they started mating yesterday, then I thought better of it.
they were mating again today, both are in and out of it for most of the day, I think they are mostly curious about it, rather than knowing what to do in it, but it's too soon for her to lay eggs yet.
