I am taking in a male Derbyan Parakeet next week as a rescue. I don't know a lot of details about him yet but the owner reports that he is a little nervous around things like loud sounds and other pets, but has never once bitten anyone and is an excellent talker. I think she said he is about 7 years old and is a toy destroyer (something my ekkies definitely aren't!)

This is not a species I am familiar with so I am hoping someone out there can educate me. I am especially interested in comparisons between this species and more common ones ('tiels, quakers, larger birds?) with a focus on dietary needs and behaviour.

It's a Psittacula, which is the Asian Ringneck species... i.e. Indian Ringnecks and Alexandrines. A similar bird is the Moustache Parakeet, which is the miniature form of the Derby. Don't have personal experience with the Psittacula (except for one that was potentially going to be given to me, but father decided to keep the bird), but have heard that the Derby's make excellent pets! They are large, gorgeous birds! (mayhap not as big as an ekkie, but definitely larger than I expected!)

I just brought Dexter home today. He is definitely bigger than I expected, and his tail is very long. He seems to be a very sweet boy, very talkative and gentle with his beak. His former owner says he can be kind of nervous but they only have amazons to compare to. Dexter seems to be a lot more reserved, kind of like my ekkies. He is gorgeous too.

I am sad to see that his cage doesn't have many toys. I keep reading that Derby's can be quite destructive. I will go out and get him some toys to keep him busy tomorrow.

Does anyone else here have Derbyans?

The derby that's in the pet store here, last time I went and visited him he had *NO* toys and *NO* perches. He had food and water, as well as calcium/mineral blocks, but that was it!

However, upon closer inspection, if you look at the bottom of his cage there is a wooden dowel perch down there with both ends chewed to smithereens and various shards and chips of wood beneath the cage grate... it seems as if "destructive" might be an understatement! LOL

I have two male Derbyans ages 16 & 17 as of 2014
Drache04,

I own two male Derbyans. I've had them since they were less than 6 months old. I'm trying to reach out and find other Derbyan owners. I may even create a blog or website of some kind. If you do still have him please reply back to me.
I can find scientific information about them but not social information in regards to owners.

I look forward to hopefully hearing from you.

Thanks,
~Michael

Hi, it sounds like you probably realize it's an older thread, so hopefully they're still around to answer. I wanted to suggest how about finding a forum or online group in addition to this one which specializes in Psittacula parakeets such as the Derbyan, Ringnecks, Alexandrines, Mustache parakeets...

Derbyan's are beautiful! There's one (a female) called Derby Girl at a bird store. She's been there for YEARS though technically she's still for sale. She's typical Psittacula, and not hands on, also very particular who she steps up to or she'll bite. She screams a lot ackACKackACKackACK!! x 20. Would drive me nuts LOL :D
