Hi folks,

It seems that Mango(a male young 2 month old English budgie) has developed a strong likeness for me because he wants to stay near me(he is a week old in my home now)and now he just does not want to stay in the cage ( not even for 30 mins), though he just uses his cage only for sleeping in the night.

Sometimes it becomes absolutely necessary for me to go out for about 2 hours or so and I am worried how he will do then, since he goes absolutely bonkers if no 1 lets him out.

How could I make him trust his cage..so that he can stay there calm for few hours. I do have few toys in the cage, but he is hardly interested.

or should I bring him a another budgie friend. If yes then a male or female, American or English budgie friend?

If ill get another budgie, will he associate me in the same way as he does now?

Also I am aiming to train him to talk first and then bring a companion for him.

Thanks,

NIsha

To make him enjoy his cage ALWAYS make him have his meals in the cage so he associates it with being in the cage.

I had rescued a cockatiel once that I had taken out of a tiny cage who had been neglected for a long time. In coming to my home, he then had a huge cage and plenty of attention. He thrived on the attention, and in a few days, became a "velcro bird" that hated to be in his bigger cage away from me. What I did to show him that he could not be with me 24/7, (with him in cage, and crying constantly), was to sit by the cage and talk to him a lot. I took him out of the cage for short periods, several times a day. He realized (after a while) that he was not going to be abandoned. And eventually calmed down.

My U2 did this for a little bit..he's much better now. He's gotta learn to play by himself and stay occupied. I've found that foraging toys and making him something fun to eat will help. I had 2 budgies as a child but mine were almost always out of the cage and they never cried for attention. They were practically silent lol.

I posted about my scaredy-cockatiel Newman not long ago who HATED the big new cage. My other tiel didn't mind the new cage, but Newman wasn't having any of it. He was actually scared of it, but it doesn't sound like that is your birds issue. However, what helped him to adjust fairly quickly was millet spray (insert chorus singing here). Just half a branch of it on some paper in the bottom of the cage was a major help. Millet helped him to enjoy spending time in the cage. I also made sure to include his favorite toys and perches, anything to keep the birds entertained while alone.
