Poor baby.

There are all sorts of tricks to fix a splayed leg; one of the biggest is basically cutting a sponge into an 8 shape and putting his legs through it. Creates a cast almost and forces the leg to be straight up rather than out.

I personally would whisk him off to a vet and let him do it and explain any long term treatment. We twisted Merlins the wrong way (on purpose, it wasnt going to go back the right way) but he taught us how to manipulate his leg to help him best.

that was not easy!, especially since he is sooooo wiggly :), but we managed to do the best we could.

I've seen a hobble made from a small cosmetic sponge and some bandage tape. That worked for a friend's bird. Cut sponge to size, cut 2 holes for legs, and tape around sponge to give it rigidity.

I saw that as well, it might take a few tries to see what works best.

I prefer the sponge method to take. Ripping take off skin seems painful but a sponge is just... sponge!

Hope it gets fixed, if not, Merlin's a splayed birdy and he's happy so... :)

I did the sponge method and it worked out really well:D.....now we wait.
what I am somewhat concerned about is if it doesn't rectify itself, and has splayed leg(I'm not worried about that),I am concerned how he will fit in with my other birds, I don't wan't him being picked on or becoming a target....but I guess I'll cross that bridge if and when it comes.

I'd bet you my last bit of money that your bird will come out as top dog. In the wild, probably not.

Brucie doesn't tolerate being bullied by other birds and will look out for the others that are getting bullied. (He's also 'less abled') and Merlin is similar, he grew up African Greys whilst having a splayed leg and had no trouble at all. Can't speak for what he's like now as he doesn't interact with other birds.

You're little fella is probably gonna be the spunkiest of the lot. Especially since you've tried to fix it, I doubt it'd be that bad of a splay after your meddling and he'll probably be just fine. :)

As long as the bird's hip joint has not been affected, your little chick should come out of this with no problems.....

In the wild, it would be ostersized by its flock & possibly even killed, but where there is no competition for food or nesting places, your other birds would probably just shun it, unless you keep all your birds together in one large cage.....
