Cockatiels - Oz & Kaila
So, I went to the petshop to buy some stuff for Oz today, and saw that they had new tiels there! Of course, I got curious and went over so I could look and 'aaawww' at them.

But when I peered into their cage, I saw three tiels sitting at the bottom of the cage, huddled up together and seeming pretty scruffy, one of them even had some pin feathers.

On the cage sticker, it read: born on june 7th

I don't know a lot about tiels yet I'll admit, but isn't that a little young to be sold already? =S

I feel kinda worried about them right now to be honest...

They're babies, and only 1 1/2 months old. Probably just weaned, but, scared and keeping together, because each other is all that is familiar to them. Same with pin feathers...they're babies, and just growing.

They might be still under hand feeding at one and a half months old. They wean at different times. Most of my babies wean around 41-45 days old but some wean a bit later. They do huddle together cause they are scared and keeping each other warm, probably very new to cages still. I personally don't like to post them until they're past that stage. I wonder if they even let them fly? Were they clipped???

Yes, the pet shop clips all their birds.

Well, at least it's good to ear they might be just old enough? I'd read they can revert back to wanting to be handfed so I was a little worried. I don't think they still handfeed them thought since they had a food bowl, but I have no idea what it was. It wasn't seeds, but looked kinda like round pellets that absorbed water, maybe(it was at the far back of the cage so I didn't really have a good view of it since the cage is quite high)?

I'd seriously never seen that before when I looked up bird food, is it some kind of baby food?

It might be weaning food! But still, at that age they need to watch them closely....Any baby of mine that sits on the bottom of the cage, I would go inside and pick them up and place them on the perch. That way they learn to stay on the perch instead of the cage bottom. I allow them to fly until they've been weaned for at least a week before I do any clipping. To me they were too young to be clipped yet....

Depending on the pet store, they may also be for pre-sale. There's a pet store near me that breeds (I think) and hand-raises (I know) birds, and they have many half-weaned birds out on the "sales floor." But their policy is that you can put down a deposit on a bird, but it cannot go home with you until it is fully weaned and has spent some time at the store in the cage it will be living in so that it is used to the new environment.
