my poor Num Num has broken his lower mandible, I don't know how, I'm balling and can barely type.

His mandible is half off, and I can't do anything for him.

the nearest emerg vet is 4 hours away.

I've given him Meticam, put a heat lamp on him, and given Quick stop where it is torn.

if he makes it by morning I'll be lucky.

is there anything else I can do????????

Omg how the hell? Just try to remain calm it may look worse than it actually is. Don't let him see you panic it will make him panic. Sounds like you're doing the right thing so far, except for the panicking. I hope he will be okay. Blood makes everything look like a crime scene...once he's more cleaned up you can assess the situation. Hopefully someone with more experience with that will chime in.......???

I think Safari, my Senegal had something to do with this, Num Num and Pearl have been mating, and right now Num Num is highly protective with his cage. He probably tried to bite Safari thru the bars and she grabbed his beak, while he was climbing on it.

right now he's walking around the cage, god he's tuff!, his lower jaw is hanging, and he's moving around.

I gave him some water, but no food.

Omg! Yikes... I am so sorry. Your Senegal can definitely inflict that kind of damage. Does Safari have any blood on him? I hope your cockatiel will be okay.

Yes when two happen in a row both with beak damage there's a culprit! Best keep them supervised or remove Safari out of the room!

ok, so the bleeding has stopped which is a huge relief!!
first thing tomorrow morning we are making an appt. at the vets.

Kaladisa- I'm really not one to panic, I get upset, like I'm suppose to when I see my birds jaw hanging, and blood everywhere.
My daughter is 11 and she is balling knowing this is not good, but she was there to help me.
I've seen plenty here with breeding and gotten use to plenty, but this I've never encountered before. I know my baby is in pain, and I still don't know how this happened.

nope, no blood on Safari.

We have been over his cage with a fine tooth comb, found a little bit of blood at the bottom of the cage on two of the bars, then up further, then lots on the perch he was on
I was in the bird room feeding my other birds, and my daughter went into our bedroom to feed my pet birds, which is where Num Num is, along with Safari and others.
Num Num was in his cage with Pearl, but Safari was out.
just before dinner I checked on the birds and they were fine.
right after dinner, we went to feed them and found him injured.

ohhh, I remember now,my other cockatiel flew out of the bedroom accidently, and injured herself, luckily it had nothing to do with Safari.

I'm so glad to hear the bleeding stopped! Wow that pic looked rough! I was telling you not to panic, but I was panicked looking at it! He sounds like a tough little dude, and that will work in his favor. :)

Unfortunately it happens often when you have multiple species living together, big and small. It has happened to my GCC breeders and lovebird over the years.

As long as the bleeding has stopped he should be ok until morning. I'm glad you have some Metacam for the pain, that's great!
The vet will give you antibiotics and more pain meds. Sometimes they remove what's hanging, sometimes they tape it. Depends on the wound. Not good pic put I doubt they'll be able to tape it.

Your bird is gonna make it. His beak might need filing every few weeks like I do with mine once it grows back as the injury might make it grow scissors beak.

thanks Echo, I know it was a terrible picture, I just had it on the wrong setting, as the camera is fairly new and still getting use to it.
tomorrow won't come fast enough, I keep checking on him, which just gets him all hyper and excited again, so I'm going to let him be for now.

omg! Not to take anything away from what has happened to num num, but I was in the kitchen washing dishes and on the phone when I heard all this commotion in my living room. I found both my birds on the floor, fighting. They were rolling around in a ball attacking each other. I was finally able to break it up, put Rio in her cage. She has a puncture wound on her foot, but she is fine. Kiwi lost a few feathers but that was it. It was the most scariest thing to see. And I am so glad neither really got hurt.

I know Kiwi started it, and I ended it. I came back to my iPad and it was still opened to this thread. I sure hope you Num Num will be okay.

Yes best to cover them and let him sleep and rest. Go to the vet as soon as you can in the morning. He will surely need soft food if he already doesn't.

thank you everyone! I've been very worried about him!!

I checked on Num Num first thing this morning, he seems to be in pretty good spirits considering, but is very quiet.
He's not bleeding anymore, but this mouth and the side of his beak are covered in blood, so it's difficult to tell or see the damage.

just to clarify some things here: it was his beak that attaches to the side of his face, his lower jaw,not the end of his beak. It looked like it had been pulled away from the side of his face.

I'm only suspecting it might have been Safari who might have done this, honestly we will never know as I was not there when it happened. Yes Safari is capable of doing damage, but out of all the birds I have, Safari tolerates my cockatiels the best.
Today I'll be going over their cage again, since I'm thinking a lot better, and see if I can figure this out.

@Mikey-no Num Num was in his cage with Pearl, they have been mating on and off for three days.
@Socalwendy- glad your bird only got a puncture wound and your babies are ok
@Echo- I am currently cooking some rice, corn, peas, spinach, for his morning breakfast :)
@Kaladisa- thanks, your right he is a tough one, which really surprises me, he's very very special to me and I love him dearly!!
