sorry this took so long, but we picked him up late afternoon, then had a bite to eat.

so there is good news, and bad news, first the bad news.

Num Num tore his beak from the side of his face, so much so, that there is now dead tissue forming. you could literally pull it away from his face by 1/4"!!

because of the dead tissue surrounding his lower beak, he may eventually loose his beak altogether.

Evan(the vet and surgeon) scrapped away all the dead tissue, and saw no new blood supply to the area, but is hoping it will begin some new growth.
He was quite disappointed in that area, he had hoped for a better outcome.
Num Nums lower beak has now turned colour due to lack of blood flow.
Evan is hopeful that he will grow new tissue but he said it did not look promising at this point.

now for the good news.... Num Num came out of the surgery very well, was pruning himself, and eat millet.
they wired his lower jaw with very fine wire.
according to Evan his jaw aligned perfectly and should heal fairly well.

Num Num is in his own cage, by himself, and immediately started to eat millet.
he is such a trooper.
He climbed the cage with his mangled beak and climbed half way up before perching....that is where he wanted to go.
his feathers under his beak pulled out so easily due to the dead tissue forming, and right now I'm not sure if they will grow back.

we have a re-check in two weeks time, and we'll take it from there.

here is a picture of Num Num:

Oh wow, Beth. That is some extensive damage that happened to NumNum's beak. :( So are you saying he may lose his entire lower beak????

How will he be able to eat then?

Yes, that is what Evan said.
It is a very strong possibility he will :(

Num Num will have to learn how to eat just with his upper beak and tongue.

to be honest I'm not really, I'm just so thankful he's home now.
He looks so much better than when he left here.

Evan did such an amazing job on Num Num, he saved his life.

I'll probably loose it if it starts to fall off, but I'm trying to be positive and think happy thoughts. And I'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

Num Num is young, just a little over a year old, really healthy, and just chalked full of energy.

the vets called Num Num the 'energizer birdie" lol.

I am happy to see your NumNum home and happy. He is surely a special cockatiel and he is a gorgous boy for sure.

Thank you for keeping us updated with his progress. Even with the "bad" news it looks like he will make recovery and continue to get stronger. I marvel with your Vet's talent of being able to fix that tiny little jaw. I am in awe of that being able to be done.

Your dedication to your flock is so wonderful to see. Thank you so much for putting up the pictures and the x-rays. I always want to continue to learn about parrots and you always help with that.

Take care and I am very happy to see NumNum on the mend!!

thank you Rebecca!, it's so good to see you on here!
it's certainly been an experience for sure, and one I never ever want to repeat.
Links Road Animal Clinic in Toronto is one of the best in Canada.
they are known through out the country as 90% of the animals they treat are exotics.

I am very fortunate to have them just 45 minutes away.

thanks Karigan;

I hope this never happens to anyone else ever!!, it's been such an emotional roller coaster, but the worst is now over....or at least until his beak mends or decides not to.

Awe I'm glad to hear and see he is home. I had to work today, I thought about him a few times today. He looks good from the photo. I'm sry to hear that he might lose his lower beak all together. Does this mean another surgery for him? I'm hoping he won't lose it. Well it's late. I wanted to pop in to see how he was doing. :) stay positive.

thanks every body for the well wishes!, it really means a lot to me to have such wonderful support!

Num Num is one tough little dude!,lol, and looks sooooo much better than when he left here.

hopefully today he will attempt to eat some soft food, but I will be hand feeding him just to get him going a bit.
I'm going to take pictures daily to log his progress, and to get a closer look at the progress of his beak, I am keeping my fingers and toes crossed he doesn't loose it.

**update on Num Num**

Today he is not good.

he's puffy, shaking and not eating any of the special food I have offered him.
he ate about 2cc's of hand feeding formula this morning, then had a bit of water, then wanted to rest and doze.

I fed him another 4cc's a couple of hours later, he ate fairly well, but I don't like the puffiness.

I've called the vets, and Evan suggested I give him the Metacam every 12 hours instead of every 24 hours.

He said for now the hand feeding formula is good, and he will start to eat when he is ready to.

His face is more swollen today, and his beak and face is much more bruised. the pain goes right into the side of his face up into his eye, which is often closed due to the discomfort.
Evan said if his lower beak dies off, it will need to be surgically removed....

Oh my goodness I so hope he pulls through this. I've thought about him so many times today. Bruising always looks worse a day or two after any accident on any creature so that is to be expected. He's clearly feeling unwell so he's bound to be a bit puffed up. I so hope the Metacam helps him. You are taking care of him so beautifully. Stay strong, sending hugs.
