Post Plum Headed Parakeet Noise Level

I used to have budgies when I was a teenager and I want to get back into parrot ownership. I have been looking at various species and found plum headed parakeet. From what I read, it is gorgeous (male has the beautiful coloring), appropriate size, temperament and price. The only problem is that I have been reading conflicting reports about its noise level. Some sites say it is "low" others say it is a "house" pet (not appropriate for an apartment). Is it possible to have a plum headed parakeet in an apartment?

Re: Plum Headed Parakeet Noise Level

I would say that yes, it's possible to have one in an apartment.

Some parrots are considered to be very loud birds, regardless of their size, so not good apartment/condo pets... and some of them do just fine in those situations! It really depends on the birds and owners.

So even if they may not be considered good "apartment" birds, I can't say that it can't work out, either! I would however suggest contacting the apartment owners and asking what is and is not acceptable. Parrots usually don't make noise once they go to bed, unlike dogs who may bark throughout the night.... so that is a bonus! Although, the noise of a parrot may bother neighbors and you may want to make sure that you notify other people around you that you are getting a potentially noisy bird and may want to ask them to contact you if the noise is a problem. You may also want to specify to your neighbors that your bird will not be making a lot of noise at night, if any, but that your bird may be noisy during the day.

Re: Plum Headed Parakeet Noise Level

Our Plum head is only moderately noisy, it doesn't call all that much and then mostly when out of its cage. The volume level is easy to take, unless it's on your shoulder I'd think, if our bird were any guide, it'd be fine in an apartment.

Re: Plum Headed Parakeet Noise Level

Interesting thing about plum headed parakeets is that they are not as widespread as many other birds in terms of birds for sale. I could go to a bird store or a breeder today and get a cockatiel or a budgie but plum headed ones are not as popular/widespread. I will definitely be seriously considering a plum headed as my number 1 choice of parrot.
